Jason Bennett Thatcher
Jason Bennett Thatcher is an American information systems scholar whose research examines cybersecurity behavior, social media, digital work, technostress, strategic alignment, and digital leadership. He holds the Tandean Rustandy Esteemed Professorship at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder and is a Full Professor of Management Science at Alliance Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester.
Thatcher’s research focuses on individual decision-making, strategic alignment, and workforce issues related to the effective use of information technology in organizations. His more recent work has examined cybersecurity, social media, and digital upper echelons. His publications have appeared in journals including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems.
Education
Thatcher earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Political Science from the University of Utah. He later attended Florida State University, where he completed a Master of Public Administration in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Business Administration in 2002.
Academic career
Thatcher began his academic career at Clemson University, where he served as assistant professor, associate professor, full professor, and Trevillian Professor in the Department of Management. At Clemson, he also directed the Social Media Listening Center and the Social Analytics Institute.
He later joined the University of Alabama as MIS Endowed Faculty Fellow and then Temple University, where he served as the Milton F. Stauffer Professor in the Department of Management Information Systems at the Fox School of Business. In 2024, he joined the University of Colorado Boulder as Tandean Rustandy Esteemed Professor in Organizational Leadership and Information Analytics.
Thatcher has also held international appointments and fellowships at institutions including Alliance Manchester Business School, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Technical University of Munich, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Baptist University, IT University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Dortmund, and the Weizenbaum Institute.
Research
Thatcher’s work can be grouped into four main research themes.
Cybersecurity and information security behavior
One stream of Thatcher’s research examines cybersecurity behavior, phishing, trust in technology, information security messaging, and employee security practices. His studies have examined how individuals respond to phishing attempts, how organizations design security messages, and how employees interpret cybersecurity controls.

A second stream examines social media, online identity, digital stigma, political affiliation, and hiring decisions. This work includes studies of social media screening in employee selection, political affiliation and employment judgments, social networking site identity, online harassment reporting, and disclosures of post-traumatic stress disorder by veterans on social media.

A third stream examines technostress, interruptions, remote work, digital labor, and the information technology workforce. Thatcher’s work in this area has studied technology-related stress, IT mindfulness, telework, work-life conflict, professional identity among IT workers, and turnover among technology professionals.

A fourth stream examines strategic alignment, digital leadership, artificial intelligence, and digital platform ecosystems. This research addresses how organizations align business and information technology strategy, how senior leaders shape digital transformation, and how firms organize around artificial intelligence and platform-based business models.

Editorial and professional service
Thatcher has served in editorial roles at several information systems journals. Within the Association for Information Systems (AIS), Thatcher served as president from 2015 to 2018 and vice president of membership from 2009 to 2015. He also served as president of AIS SIG-Adoption and Diffusion of Information Technology.
His conference service includes serving as Program Co-Chair of the International Conference on Information Systems in 2024 and Co-Chair of AMCIS 2020.
Awards and honors
Thatcher was named an AIS Fellow in 2019 and an AIS Senior Scholar in 2018.
