Jiang Ping (chinese: 姜萍) was a 17-year old Chinese girl who went viral on Chinese social media for qualifying as a finalist in the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition despite receiving no formal mathematics schooling. It was later discovered that she had cheated.
Background
As a student, Jiang Ping attended a vocational school in China for fashion design. She did not receive any formal mathematics schooling, but rather was stated to have studied mathematics as a hobby in her free time. Her decision to choose a vocational school was due to her wishes to study fashion design in addition to the fact that her friends and her sister also attended the school. A mathematics teacher at her vocational school, Wang Runqiu, said that he had seen her talent and encouraged her to enter the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition, a math competition open to all students across the world.
