Joseph Matick is an American poet who lives in Paris. He is the author of the Baba Books trilogy (Far West Press, 2021), the novel Cherry Wagon (Far West Press, 2022) and the poetry collection Good Looking Pomes (Far West Press, 2026). He studied at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, where his teachers included Anne Waldman.^[1][2] Reviewing the launch of Good Looking Pomes in Mundane Magazine in April 2026, the novelist David Polonoff placed Matick within the lineage of Allen Ginsberg's "angel-headed hipsters."^[3] Alongside his books, Matick has worked as a musician under his own name and as half of the duo Girlyboi, and as a filmmaker, scenographer and theatre voice-over artist in France and the United States.

Matick grew up on a farm in the American Midwest. He attended the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.^[1]

Far West Press published Matick's debut, Baba Books, in 2021 as three small-format paperbacks: New American Babble, Post Meridiem Seasick Fuzz and Animal My Soul.^[4] The press later issued the volumes as a collected edition. His first novel, Cherry Wagon, followed in 2022; a copy is held in the collection of the American Library in Paris.^[5]

Good Looking Pomes was launched in April 2026 at the Parkside Lounge on New York's Lower East Side. Reviewing the launch in Mundane Magazine, the novelist David Polonoff wrote that Matick was "the latest exemplar" of Allen Ginsberg's "angel-headed hipsters," and described an evening that moved between poetry, music and performance, with readings by Ryanaustin Dennis, Cynthia Ross, Garett Stanford Phelps, Clara Joy and Meg Superstar Princess, and a musical set by Savannah Knoop.^[3]

In Paris, the bookshop After 8 Books hosted Matick for an evening of readings titled Wednesday Night in June 2023.^[6]

In Chicago in the mid-2010s, Matick formed the folk-rock duo Girlyboi with the musician and model Carly Russ; the pair later moved to Paris.^[7] VICE premiered the duo's single "Bedside" later that year.^[8] Billboard covered the duo's Good Looks EP in 2016, in a piece in which Matick told the magazine, "Ultimately, if I can't share these songs with my children around a campfire, then I don't want to be creating music."^[9] The British magazine HEROINE profiled the duo in its sixth print issue in 2017.^[10]

In 2019, Matick released his solo recording Two Songs, covered by Flaunt.^[11] In 2024, he released the album Western Pink on the Los Angeles label Velvet Bikini in collaboration with The Jack Cardigan Orchestra. The music journalist Piotr Orlov picked the record among his mid-year favourites in Dada Strain,^[12] and the Los Angeles radio station Dublab devoted a broadcast to the album in advance of its release, with Matick credited for overdubs and spoken-word readings across the record.^[13] In a Q&A with the music platform Echo Room, Matick said the Los Angeles poetry night that preceded the album was "a sort-of circus of like-minded spirits with nothing aesthetically in common."^[14]

Matick directed ANNE FILM, a portrait of Anne Waldman shot by Ambrose Bye and made between 2021 and 2023.^[2] The film is archived on Waldman's official video archive, where Bye writes that Matick "sent me 9 prompts in Mexico City from Los Angeles" during the pandemic, from which the portrait was assembled.^[2] ANNE FILM was shown at the Fort Collins Book Festival in 2021 as part of an Open Flame Poetics programme that included Waldman.^[15]

Matick designed the scenography for Écrire en français : Histoires de langues, voyages de mots, a touring exhibition alongside Raphaelle Macaron and curated by Bernard Magnier and Sabyl Ghoussoub for the Alliance française de Paris, distributed internationally through the Institut français network.^[16] After its Paris run on boulevard Raspail in 2025, the exhibition has travelled to the Institut français in Naples^[17] and Santiago.^[18]

In 2024, Matick provided the voix off for Titre du spectacle ; une tragédie en III actes, a production by the Paris-based theatre company Compagnie À Mes Joies Brèves (Jeanne Bodelet, Nina Brun and Ambre Munié Louisor).^[19]
