June Middleton was an American stockbroker, attorney, educator, and business advisor known for being the first African American woman to work as a stockbroker for a member firm of the New York Stock Exchange in the 1960s. Her entry into the securities industry represented an early milestone in the integration of Wall Street and the expansion of opportunities for women and African Americans in finance.

June Middleton developed an interest in finance at a young age after visiting the New York Stock Exchange during a school trip. The experience inspired her to pursue a career in finance despite the limited opportunities available to women and African Americans in the industry at the time. She later studied economics and accounting and eventually earned a law degree, combining legal and financial expertise in her career.

In the early 1960s, Middleton passed the registered representative examination required to sell securities and became a stockbroker with Hornblower & Weeks,Hemphill-Noyes, a brokerage firm that was a member of the New York Stock Exchange. By the mid-1960s, she was reportedly the only African American woman working as a stockbroker for a New York Stock Exchange member firm.

Her achievement came during a period when Wall Street firms employed very few women and almost no African Americans in brokerage roles. Middleton’s position therefore represented both a racial and gender breakthrough in the securities industry. Her work helped demonstrate that women and minority professionals could succeed in financial services, which contributed to gradual increases in diversity within the industry in later decades.

In 1965, Middleton was profiled in The New York Times, which described her career as the realization of a childhood ambition to work in the stock market. The article highlighted the rarity of her role and the significance of her presence in the industry at that time.

After her work as a stockbroker, Middleton pursued a varied professional career that included working as an attorney, business consultant, educator, and television program host. She advised small businesses on financial planning and operations and was involved in educational and business development activities.

June Middleton is considered a pioneer in the history of African Americans and women in finance. Historians of Wall Street and African American business history have identified her as one of the early figures who helped break racial and gender barriers in the securities industry. Her career occurred before broader diversity initiatives in finance and helped pave the way for later generations of minority and female financial professionals.

Although relatively little documentation exists about her life compared with other financial pioneers, her role as one of the first African American women stockbrokers remains an important milestone in the history of Wall Street integration and professional opportunities for women in finance.
