Draft:Knowledge Transfer Networks

Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) was a United Kingdom innovation network associated with Innovate UK. It connected businesses, universities, researchers, investors and public-sector organisations to support innovation and the commercialisation of new ideas.

The network later became known as Innovate UK KTN and was subsequently renamed Innovate UK Business Connect.[1]

History

The origins of the Knowledge Transfer Network can be traced to the United Kingdom's Faraday Partnerships, which were created to improve links between industry and the research base. These partnerships were later transformed into Knowledge Transfer Networks before becoming part of the innovation support system associated with the Technology Strategy Board, now known as Innovate UK.[2]

In 2015, the UK Government described KTN as a network established by Innovate UK to help people and companies reach the full potential of their innovative capabilities by connecting them with each other.[3]

In November 2021, the Knowledge Transfer Network was rebranded as Innovate UK KTN. Innovate UK stated that the change was intended to strengthen strategic alignment between the network and Innovate UK.[4]

It was later renamed Innovate UK Business Connect.[1]

Activities

The Knowledge Transfer Network supported innovation by connecting organisations with expertise, markets, finance and potential partners. Its activities included networking events, sector communities, innovation briefings, partner searches and support for collaborative research and development.

Innovate UK Business Connect states that its role was to connect innovators with new partners and opportunities, accelerating ideas into real-world solutions.[1]

The network worked across multiple sectors, including agri-food, energy, digital technologies, manufacturing, health, transport, materials and creative industries.

Relationship with Innovate UK

KTN was closely associated with Innovate UK, the United Kingdom's innovation agency. Innovate UK's strategic delivery plan for 2022 to 2025 described Innovate UK KTN as bringing complementary talent and insight to support Innovate UK's products, services and engagement with innovator and investor communities.[5]
