LUNA is a professional digital audio workstation (DAW) developed by Universal Audio (UA). Originally introduced at the Winter NAMM Show in January 2020 as the "LUNA Recording System" — a hardware-dependent recording extension exclusive to macOS and tied directly to Universal Audio's proprietary Apollo DSP audio interfaces — the software has since been re-engineered into a cross-platform standalone DAW. It operates natively on both macOS and Windows with any standard Core Audio or ASIO hardware interface.

The software is distributed under a proprietary freemium pricing structure. The foundational multitrack recording application is available free of charge under the "UAD Explore FREE" license tier, while advanced hardware routing capabilities, console summing matrix architectures, and premium signal processors are sold as a commercial software expansion called "LUNA Pro."

LUNA Recording System (2020–2023)

Universal Audio introduced "LUNA Recording System" at the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, in January 2020. In deliberate contrast to conventional digital audio workstations such as Pro Tools or Logic Pro, Universal Audio avoided the "DAW" designation entirely, positioning the product as a "recording system" conceived as a software extension of its existing UAD Console infrastructure. The architecture was designed around tight hardware coupling: real-time audio processing was offloaded to the onboard digital signal processor (DSP) chips inside Universal Audio's Thunderbolt-connected Apollo and Arrow audio interfaces, achieving monitoring latencies below 2 milliseconds that CPU-based native processing could not match at the time. Industry press reinforced this framing — Tape Op opened its launch review with the headline: "Please don't call it a DAW!"[1]

The software officially launched on April 7, 2020, released ahead of schedule as a free download exclusive to owners of compatible Apollo and Arrow hardware. Universal Audio cited the early lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic as a factor in accelerating the release date.[2][3]

Over the following three years, Universal Audio expanded the Recording System with Session Versions, Track Groups, console Extensions modeled on the Neve and API hardware lineages, and multitrack tape emulations. Still under the "LUNA Recording System" branding, the software won the NAMM TEC Award for Workstation Technology/Recording Devices in both 2021 and 2022.[4][5]

Transition to Standalone DAW (2023–present)

On November 9, 2023, Universal Audio fundamentally repositioned the product: the mandatory hardware dependency was removed, the "Recording System" label was dropped, and the software was rebranded simply as "LUNA" — a free, standalone DAW available to all macOS users regardless of hardware ownership.[6] This transition marked LUNA's formal entry into the competitive standalone DAW market. Compatibility was extended to Windows on May 21, 2024, making the software available across both major desktop operating systems.[6]

LUNA 2.0 launched on October 21–22, 2025, introducing native Audio Random Access (ARA 2) support, Hardware Inserts for routing tracks through outboard analog gear, AI-powered workflow tools, and an updated "LUNA Pro 2.0" commercial tier.[7][8] Maintenance updates released in early 2026 (versions 2.0.2 and 2.0.3) resolved ARA plugin session-save bugs and introduced track templates for the UAD Explore FREE bundle.[9]

Architecture and Features

LUNA's user interface and core audio engine are modeled on the workflow and topology of large-format analog recording consoles. Rather than depending solely on floating plug-in windows, the application integrates saturation engines, summing networks, and tape emulation modules directly into channel strip architecture.

Hardware Integration

While compatible with standard audio interfaces, LUNA includes deeply integrated sub-systems for Universal Audio hardware:

  • Apollo Integration (Apollo Mode): When connected to a supported Thunderbolt Apollo or Arrow interface, LUNA can engage "Apollo Mode," which activates "Accelerated Realtime Monitoring" (ARM). This bypasses native operating-system audio buffer latency by routing live tracking inputs through the interface's onboard DSP chips, achieving round-trip monitoring latencies below 2 milliseconds. LUNA also natively controls Universal Audio's Unison preamp technology, enabling software-level adjustment of hardware impedance and gain-staging parameters directly from the DAW timeline.
  • Volt 876 Integration: LUNA includes dedicated driver-level communication with the Volt 876 USB audio interface. This provides software control of the hardware's "Assistive Auto-Gain" input leveling, low-latency cue mix routing, and full session recall of front-panel physical settings.

AI and Assistive Workflow Tools

LUNA 2.0 and later versions incorporate machine learning-powered automation utilities:

  • Voice Control: Available on Apple silicon machines, this module allows hands-free control of transport functions. Users can trigger recording, playback, and marker navigation via spoken commands using a wake phrase or direct command syntax.
  • Smart Tempo Tools: Three distinct machine learning utilities manage project grid alignment: Tempo Listen measures live instrument performances to calculate a session BPM baseline before recording begins; Tempo Detection analyzes imported loops or short audio files and warps them to fit the current project tempo; Extract Tempo generates a full adaptive tempo map from a freely-played recorded performance or an existing session.
  • Instrument Detection: An automated categorization engine that scans incoming audio to identify instrument types. It applies color-coding, icon assignment, and appropriate default audio warp algorithms to each channel strip automatically.

Console Extensions and Instruments

LUNA uses a proprietary "Extension" format that embeds processing directly into the mixer's channel strips and summing buses, rather than operating as separate floating plug-in windows. These extensions model the response and saturation characteristics of historical hardware units including the Neve 80-Series console, the API Vision console, the Studer A800 multitrack tape machine, and the Ampex ATR-102 mastering deck.

The DAW hosts dedicated virtual instruments developed for the LUNA architecture, including the Shape Instrument Toolkit (a sample-based sound library), the Opal Morphing Synthesizer, PolyMAX Synth, and the Ravel Grand Piano. MIDI composition utilities include the ChordAXE Lite chord generator and the ARP MIDI Arpeggiator.

Control Surface Compatibility

LUNA supports external hardware control surfaces via two industry-standard protocols:[10]

  • Mackie Control Universal (MCU): Native support for the MCU protocol enables automatic fader, transport, and plug-in mapping for surfaces including the SSL UF8, Behringer MCU series, PreSonus FaderPort, iCon Pro Audio controllers, ONE Control Plus, and software emulators such as V-Control Pro, V-Console, and DAW Control.
  • EuCon Protocol: Dedicated configuration pathways for Avid EuCon-enabled control surfaces allow native fader mirroring and track focus control across large-format console setups.

Software Editions

The core LUNA DAW engine, multitrack recording infrastructure, and unrestricted track count are identical across both distribution tiers. The tiers are differentiated by included signal processing suites, hardware routing options, and bundled third-party tools.[6]

LUNA (Free Edition)

The free edition of LUNA is distributed as part of the "UAD Explore FREE" bundle, requiring only a free Universal Audio account and a free PACE iLok account. It includes the full multitrack recording environment alongside a curated set of stock processors and instruments:[6]

LUNA Pro

LUNA Pro is a commercially sold upgrade bundle of additional LUNA Extensions, UAD plug-ins, virtual instruments, and third-party tools. It has been released in two versions.

LUNA Pro V1 (released alongside the standalone free transition in November 2023) added the API Vision Console emulation, API Vision Channel Strip Collection, API 2500 Bus Compressor, API Summing Extension, Studer A800 Tape Recorder Extension, Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape Recorder Extension, Galaxy Tape Echo, and Pultec Passive EQ Collection. Hardware Inserts, third-party ARA tools, and the synthesizer instruments introduced in LUNA Pro 2.0 were not included.

LUNA Pro 2.0 (released October 21, 2025 alongside LUNA 2.0) restructured the bundle significantly. Hardware Inserts with automatic round-trip delay compensation were introduced as an exclusive Pro feature. The instrument library was expanded with the Opal Morphing Synthesizer, Ravel Grand Piano, Waterfall B3 Organ, and Waterfall Rotary Speaker. Third-party tools were bundled for the first time: Celemony Melodyne 5 Essential, Noiseworks DynAssist Lite, and ChordAXE Lite. Additional processors included the Fairchild Limiter Collection, Brigade Chorus Pedal, Studio D Chorus, UAD Ruby '63 Top Boost Amp, and UAD Woodrow '55 Instrument Amp. Existing LUNA Pro V1 owners received a complimentary upgrade to Pro 2.0.[6]

Licensing and Authorization

Authorization for both editions is managed through the UA Connect background utility and the PACE iLok License Manager system. A free iLok account is created automatically when UA Connect is installed for the first time. Licenses support up to three simultaneous machine activations, allocatable to local host computers or physical iLok USB Smart Keys. If all three slots are occupied, a previous machine can be deauthorized within iLok License Manager to release a slot for a new system.[6]

Reception and Awards

Media Reception

Upon its initial release as the LUNA Recording System, the software received largely positive coverage from audio trade publications. Tape Op praised the system's analog-inspired workflow and tight integration with Universal Audio's hardware ecosystem, though noted the mandatory hardware dependency as a limiting factor for users without Apollo interfaces.[1] Mixdown Magazine highlighted the software's low-latency tracking capabilities and visual aesthetics as primary strengths.[14]

Early user-community criticism focused on the mandatory Apollo hardware requirement, limited MIDI functionality in initial releases, and higher CPU consumption compared to established DAWs. Following the 2.0 update and full DAW repositioning, MusicTech assessed the software as a commercially viable alternative to established platforms such as Pro Tools, citing ARA 2 integration and latency-compensated hardware inserts as features that placed LUNA more squarely in professional studio workflows.[15] Sound on Sound noted that LUNA 2.0's hardware insert system and ARA support brought significant workflow parity with more established platforms.[8]

Industry Awards

LUNA has received multiple NAMM TEC Awards, presented annually since 1985 to recognize outstanding achievements in professional audio production:

  • 2021: Winner, Workstation Technology/Recording Devices — awarded at the 2021 virtual NAMM Show.[4]
  • 2022: Winner, Workstation Technology/Recording Devices (LUNA Recording System v1.1.8) — awarded at the 37th NAMM TEC Awards on June 4, 2022, in Anaheim, California. Universal Audio was one of only three companies to receive two TEC Awards that year.[5]
  • 2026: Finalist nomination, Workstation Technology — among eight total Universal Audio nominations at the 41st NAMM TEC Awards. Universal Audio received a record-breaking six TEC Award wins across hardware and software categories at the 2026 NAMM Show on January 22, 2026.[16][17]
