History
Formation (2009)
Labrador Labratories grew out of a solo project by Tel Aviv musician Tom Gottlieb, who created a fictional alter ego named Labra - a fabricated musician from San Francisco with a fully invented biography. The persona attracted genuine attention from music bloggers abroad and was covered by Israeli media as a real international act, effectively "importing" a Tel Aviv-based project as an overseas artist.[1]
Noam Vardy subsequently joined Gottlieb and the two began recording and performing together under the name Labrador Labratories. The fictional identity evolved into a working band with a growing catalogue and live presence.[2]
Albums (2010–2017)
The band released six albums between 2010 and 2017: Open Cage (2010), Stairway Escapist (2011), Labra Cadabra (2012), Live in Basel (2013), Lonely Tribes (2014), and Love, Death & Kisses (2017).[3] Love, Death & Kisses was distributed by The Third Ear, an independent Israeli music label.[4]
Their sound has been described as combining folk songwriting with psychedelic rock and lo-fi pop, using layered arrangements and poetic lyrics.[5] Critical reviews described the music as experimental and continuously evolving.[6]
The band performed across Israel and Europe during this period, including appearances at independent festivals such as Ya'arot Menashe Festival,[7] and built an international following through European touring and placements across film and television.[8]
Coded to be Free (2026)
On 12 May 2026, Labrador Labratories released the single Coded to be Free. The track explores identity and authenticity in the context of artificial intelligence and deepfakes, drawing on the band's own origin story as a parallel to the contemporary blurring of real and constructed identity.[9][10]
The accompanying music video, directed by Israeli-German artist Ella Michaeli, follows two chairs escaping a Berlin furniture store for a brief romantic day together, extending the song's themes of hidden emotional lives and self-determination.[11] The video was nominated at the International Student Film Festival Tel Aviv.
The single received coverage from international music publications. Earmilk described it as a hazy, slow-burning indie track with production that feels intimate and lived-in.[12] Notion called it a dreamlike and subtly psychedelic single that feels both nostalgic and forward-looking.[13] FAME Magazine noted comparisons to Mac DeMarco and Real Estate.[14] Further coverage appeared in Jammerzine[15] and TAGG Magazine.[16]
