  • Comment: The most-cited source by far is this, at Galleri Pictor. But Galleri Pictor appears to be a gallery selling Melander's works. As such, it's not a disinterested source. Hoary (talk) 23:01, 5 December 2025 (UTC)

Lars Gunnar Melander (born 23 July 1939) is a Swedish painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and his personal archive is preserved at the Kungliga biblioteket (National Library of Sweden).[1][2][3]

A book-length monograph on his life and work, Den rastlösa penseln: Lars Melanders liv, design och konst, written by art historian Gösta Arvidsson with a foreword by Beate Sydhoff, former Secretary-General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, was published by Carlsson in 2004.[4]

Early life and education

Melander was born in Stockholm on 23 July 1939.[1] He studied at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm from 1957 to 1962.[3] Upon graduating, he was awarded a scholarship by Hallmark Cards to work at the company's studios in Kansas City, United States.[3]

Career

After returning to Sweden, Melander worked as an art director and later as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer in Stockholm. He subsequently moved to the United States, where he worked as an illustrator and art director in San Francisco and New York City.[3]

His commercial work encompassed advertising campaigns, book illustration, postage stamp design, and television set design. Several commissions received industry recognition, including Sweden's Guldägget advertising award.[3]

In addition to his visual arts career, Melander is a jazz musician.[3]

Work

Arvidsson's 2004 monograph covers Melander's activities in fine art and applied graphic design from the 1960s onward. Arvidsson describes his painting as characterized by energetic, rhythmical brushwork and an engagement with the relationship between image, typography, and layout.[4]
