Draft:Lost Wolves of Yellowstone

  • Comment: We need to see some substantial independent analysis. This relies almost completely about what the filmmakers have said about the film, and on blurbs announcing its airing. If there hasn't been outside analysis, an article is not possible; this does not reflect on the quality of the film. M kuhner (talk) 14:27, 15 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: The "reviews" mostly seem to be reprinting a press release; I don't have the impression that the "reviewers" had seen the film when these were written. M kuhner (talk) 01:28, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

Lost Wolves of Yellowstone, originally titled Mollie's Pack,[a][2] is a 2025 documentary co-written by Thomas Winston and Avela Grenier. It focuses on the reintroduction of gray wolves into Yellowstone National Park led by Mollie Beattie after their extirpation 50 years prior.

Synopsis

The film tells how Mollie Beattie brought wolves from Canada to Yellowstone National Park. It showcases how the relocated wolves were put in pens before being released into the wild. A major focus of the film is "Wolf Number 5", an alpha female wolf who would be key in restoring Yellowstone's wolf population. It uses original footage of the wolf reintroduction, taken by the National Park Service on 16 mm film.[1][3][4]

Production

Prior to the film's creation, director Thomas Winston had been filming wolves in Yellowstone for the past 20 years. While filming, he would find out that certain wolves would be a part of the wolf pack known as "Mollie's Pack", which had been named after Mollie Beattie. Winston had known that Beattie had directed the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, but had only gained interest after hearing that, 18 months after she had introduced the first wolf to Yellowstone, she would pass away at the age of 49.[1]

Winston felt that the story of how wolves had been reintroduced into Yellowstone had not been told in full detail. While doing a project in 2008, he asked Yellowstone National Park for access to the archived wolf reintroduction footage, to which the park responded by saying the footage had been lost.[1] In 2018, the footage had been rediscovered in a mislabeled film vault.[3]

Release

Theatrical release

The film made its debut at various film festivals worldwide, and was shown in select IMAX theaters in the United States in early 2026.[5] It opened at The Tech Interactive on March 7, 2025 with an event called "Wolves Weekend", which included a live Q&A with Winston and a raffle to win a two-night ticket to the Great Wolf Lodge in Manteca.[6] It also showed at the Fleet Science Center with a public speech given by Cierra MacIssac, a coordinator from the California Wolf Center.[7]
