Magnum Magazine (Brazilian Portuguese: Revista Magnum), stylized as MAGNUM, is a Brazilian publication specializing in firearms, collecting, sport shooting, ammunition, and related legislation, offering technical, informative, and guidance content for the public interested in the subject. It covers various aspects of weapons, such as precision shooting and long gun shooting techniques, as well as other related topics like ballistics and archery.
História
Magnum had its first edition published in July 1986, in São Paulo, and has been in publication for over three decades.[1] It is a bimonthly publication distributed nationally and internationally by DINAP, and is present in Portugal, Paraguay, and Argentina.[2] Its audience includes military personnel, collectors, sport shooters and hunters (Brazilian Portuguese: Colecionador, Atirador Desportivo e Caçador, CAC), civilian and military police officers, as well as shooting enthusiasts, military history buffs, or collectors. It is the country's leading publication on the subject of weapons, recognized for maintaining its relevance and continuity in a scenario where this issue can be demonized or understood by many, as mentioned in articles published over the years. Its focus is on presenting an enlightening character about the world of weapons and related activities.[2]
From the beginning, the magazine promoted the armed citizen and opposed civilian disarmament. The first edition opened with an article on the right of self-defense,[1] and many editions commented on the Brazilian government's disarmament policy, especially around the time of the disarmament referendum in 2005.[3] The editorials also included criticisms of public security and suggestions for improving police efficiency.[4][5] Most of Magnum's content deals with historical or modern weaponry, including descriptions of parts, development, and firing tests. The editors of Magnum Magazine state that their audience consists of cultured and tasteful people, "who enjoy a pleasurable life outdoors."[2] In line with this assertion about the magazine's sophistication, issue 13 of year 3, from November/December 1988, features on its cover the young model Ana Paula Arósio, then only 14 years old, brandishing a Brazilian-made Rossi Model 851 revolver.[6] The editorial titled "Guns, Women and Shows" (Brazilian Portuguese: Armas, Mulheres e Shows) begins with the words "The combination of guns and women has always been a happy one: guns lend aggressiveness to women and women return sensuality to them..."[7]
Other topics include cutlery, hunting, and the gastronomy of how to prepare the meat of hunted animals.[8] Magnum offers subscriptions for its print magazines and digital subscriptions for the online version. On social media, the magazine has an official Facebook page and a YouTube channel. With the tagline "Information, Culture, Leisure," (Brazilian Portuguese: Informação, Cultura, Lazer) the channel features videos announcing new editions and target shooting or weapons testing involving invited readers.[9][10]
The magazine has regular editions and special editions. Through its own publishing house - Editora Magnum - the magazine published two technical books accessible to all readers, the Dicionário de Termos Técnicos da Área de Armas & Munições (1986 and 1994),[11] by its technical director Roberto de Barros Pimentel, and the Guia Internacional de Submetralhadoras (1996),[12] by veteran writer Ronaldo Olive; qwho had already written the special edition of Magnum Submetralhadoras & Fuzis de Assalto (November 1993), which was a success among readers.[13] In 1996, Magnum published Animax magazine, specializing in anime and manga, created by Sérgio Peixoto and José Roberto Pereira.[14] Magnum magazine maintains editorial exchanges with the foreign publications Guns & Ammo, Gun World, Guns and American Handgunner, from the United States, and Todo Armas from Spain.[15]
