Maria Surae (born May 24, 1983), born Maria Konstantinovna Ivanova, is a Russian film director, producer, screenwriter, and journalist.[1] She is the CEO of the film production company Buta Films.[2] Her professional pseudonym "Surae" translates from Arabic as "fast", a nickname she earned for her rapid pace of work.[3]
Early life and education
Born in Moscow, she is the granddaughter of Konstantin Ivanov, Honoured Artist of the RSFSR.[4] In 2006, she graduated from the Faculty of Journalism (Department of Advertising and PR) at Moscow State University.[2]
Career
Television production
From 2000 to 2003, she worked as a journalist for the newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets.[4] In 2006, she founded the film studio "Project TV", which produced over 100 films and programmes for major Russian networks including Channel One and Kultura.[4]
Film and International Projects
In 2014, Surae served as a producer for the short film Sonuncu (The Last One). The film was selected for the main short film competition at the 67th Cannes Film Festival.[5] It participated in 84 international film festivals and won nine awards.[6]
In 2016, she organized and directed the first Russian Film Festival in Lebanon.[7] The festival was attended by approximately 5,000 people.[8]
In 2021, she directed her first feature film, The Anger, which had its world premiere at the 32nd Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia.[9] In 2026, the feature film Take My Sun With You was shot in Georgia—the first co-production between Lebanon and Georgia.[10]
The short film Sonuncu also received international industry coverage. Variety identified Maria Ivanova among the producers of the Russian–Azerbaijani co-production during coverage of projects presented at the Cannes Film Festival.[11]
In 2020, Surae participated in Frontières, the genre-film co-production market of the Cannes Marché du Film, where she presented the international project In Her Head. In an interview with Variety, she discussed theatrical and streaming distribution models for independent cinema.[12]
The Anger was later selected for the 2022 British Urban Film Festival in London.[13]
Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar published an analysis of The Anger and its themes.[14]
Surae also directed the documentary film I'm Not Lakit, which examines statelessness and citizenship issues in Lebanon. The film received extensive coverage in New Lines Magazine.[15]
Reception and media coverage
Surae's work has been discussed in international media, particularly in connection with her films about social issues in Lebanon. A feature-length review in New Lines Magazine examined her documentary I'm Not Lakit and its portrayal of statelessness in Lebanon.[16]
The Pulitzer Center highlighted Surae among filmmakers documenting contemporary Lebanese society and women's experiences in the region.[17]
Her work has additionally been referenced by the Pulitzer Center in reporting on women filmmakers working in Lebanon.[18]
Public activity
In 2019, Surae founded the "CDKL5 Russia" association to support families of children diagnosed with the CDKL5 mutation.[4] The association became part of the international "CDKL5 Alliance".[4]
