Martin Botvidsson is a Swedish photographer specializing in food and product photography. His work includes photography for Swedish chef Björn Frantzén and Restaurant Frantzén, including the books Frantzén[1] and The Flying Elk: Gastropub by Björn Frantzén.[2][3] He has also worked in watch and music photography and as a photography educator.
Career
Martin Botvidsson began photographing in 2005. In 2010, Swedish photography publication Fotosidan published a profile of Botvidsson, describing his work at the time as including corporate portraiture, music photography and work for the Swedish image agency Maskot. The profile also discussed his use of digital post-production as an important part of his photographic style.[4]
He later increasingly specialized in still life, product and food photography. In a 2024 interview with the Swedish photography podcast Fotopodden, Botvidsson talked about his career development and work in these fields.[5]
Botvidsson's product and studio photography has received international coverage from photography publication Fstoppers. In 2019 they featured his approach to product photography and studio lighting.[6]
Fstoppers subsequently published further articles about his photographic techniques. A separate 2019 article covered his studio macro photography and focus-stacking process.[7] In 2020, the publication featured his method for lighting, photographing and post-processing a white product against a white background.[8] In 2022, Fstoppers covered his use of hard and soft lighting and a computer monitor as a photographic backdrop.[9]
His product and studio techniques have additionally been featured by photography publication ISO 1200 Magazine, including articles on product and watch photography.[10]
Watch photography
Botvidsson has worked with watch photography, including editorial photography for the Geneva-based GMT Magazine.
His GMTeaTime series for the magazine combined watches with tea and botanical elements. Swiss watch publication WorldTempus featured the project in connection with GMT's 2014–2015 winter edition, identifying it as the "GMTeaTime photo shoot by Swedish photographer Martin Botvidsson".[11]
The project also received international coverage from the Chinese watch publication Watch House (腕表之家), which identified Botvidsson as the photographer behind the images.[12]
His watch photography and studio techniques were later covered by ISO 1200 Magazine, which published separate features on his approach to watch photography and the use of continuous LED lighting for watch photography.[10][13]
Food and book photography
Botvidsson has photographed food and restaurant projects associated with Swedish chef Björn Frantzén.
He was the photographer for Björn Frantzén's book Frantzén, published by Norstedts in 2021. Norstedts credits Botvidsson as the photographer and describes the book as illustrated with his photographs.[1]
Botvidsson was also the photographer for The Flying Elk: Gastropub by Björn Frantzén, published by Norstedts in 2016. Frantzén Projects credits the photographs to Botvidsson, and bibliographic records also list him as the book's photographer.[2][3]
His photography associated with Restaurant Frantzén has also appeared in international media. Eater credited photographs by Botvidsson in its coverage of the restaurant's reopening in Stockholm in 2017.[14]
Recognition
The book Frantzén, for which Botvidsson was the photographer, was selected as Sweden's 2021 winner in the Restaurant Books category of the Gourmand Awards.[15]
The book The Flying Elk: Gastropub by Björn Frantzén, photographed by Botvidsson, received second prize in the category Kokböcker med restauranganknytning ("Restaurant-related cookbooks") at the 2016 Årets Svenska Måltidslitteratur awards.[16]
The book was also selected as Sweden's winner in the Chef category of the Gourmand Awards and qualified for the international Gourmand World Cookbook Awards competition in 2017.[17]
Music photography
Earlier in his career, Botvidsson worked in music photography and photographed artists and artwork for Swedish music releases. A 2010 profile in Fotosidan described music artists as one of the areas of his professional photography at the time.[4]
Botvidsson is credited for photography and art direction on West End Girls' album We Love Pet Shop Boys.[18] Photographs of West End Girls by Botvidsson were also published by Swedish magazine QX in 2006.[19]
His music photography also included work with Swedish boy band Youngblood. Botvidsson photographed the cover for the band's 2012 release Running Home to You.[20] The same year, Aftonbladet published a report from a Youngblood music-video production in London accompanied by a series of photographs credited to Botvidsson.[21]
He photographed the cover for Ellen Benediktson's 2014 single Songbird, her entry in Melodifestivalen 2014.[22]
Botvidsson has also worked with Swedish pop group Shirley's Angels, with photography credits documented on the group's Melodifestivalen single I Thought It Was Forever.[23]
His work in music has additionally included work with Swedish singer Erika Selin. Botvidsson photographed the cover for her 2015 single Break Me Up and produced the song's music video.[24] Break Me Up competed in Ireland's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015.
Botvidsson also photographed the cover for Cecilia Kallin's Love Stuck (Christmas of a Kind) from 2021.[25] The release was also covered by Skaraborgs Läns Tidning.[26]
Photography education and Profoto
Alongside his commercial photography, Botvidsson has produced educational material about product, still-life, food and macro photography and photographic lighting.
In 2019, he appeared in Profoto Academy Live – Still life photography with Martin Botvidsson, discussing studio lighting and still-life photography and answering questions about the subject.[27]
Profoto subsequently published educational material featuring his approach to product photography, including a tutorial documenting his process for photographing a perfume bottle, from building the scene and lighting it to retouching the finished image.[28]
In 2024, Profoto featured Botvidsson in a project involving its Pro-D3 professional flash system. The accompanying article, written by Shannon Sharpe, described him as a still-life, food and product photographer and documented the production of four photographs involving movement and high-speed flash photography.[29]
Botvidsson has also appeared as a guest lecturer at Sigtuna folkhögskola. The school lists him among previous guest lecturers for both its photography foundation programme (Foto distans – grundutbildning) and its photography project-year programme (Foto distans – projektår).[30][31]
He has also lectured on food and product photography for Lidingö Fotoklubb.[32]
