Justice Matthew Edmiston

Matthew Edmiston (September 9, 1814 – June 29, 1887)[1] was a state legislator and justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia from his appointment on June 13, 1876 to December 31, 1876.

Edmiston died at his home in Weston, Virginia in Lewis County, Virginia. He was born September 9th, 1814, at Little Levels, Pocahontas County, now West Virginia, where, after receiving a common school education, he was admitted to the bar in 1835. Four years after he removed to Lewis County which, later, he represented in both branches of the General Assembly of Virginia. In 1852 he was chosen a judge of the Circuit Court, in which position he continued until 1860. He was elected to a seat in the Constitutional Convention of 1872, but because of ill health did not qualify. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals in 1876, but one year before his death.[1]

Edmiston was a Democrat.[2]
