Mehran Rouhani (born 1946) is a British-Iranian composer and music educator. His work is noted for blending Western classical traditions with Iranian melodic and rhythmic influences. He has been a significant figure in the pedagogical landscape of music in both Tehran and London, and his compositions have been performed by ensembles such as the Sofia Philharmonic and the Docklands Sinfonia.

Early life and education

Rouhani was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1946. Although he initially earned a BSc in Economics, he pivoted to music, enrolling at the University of Tehran's College of Fine Arts.[1]

He later won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. At the RCM, he completed postgraduate studies and an MMus in composition under the tutelage of Philip Cannon and Anthony Milner. During this period, he also received advanced composition lessons from the composer Sir Michael Tippett.[2]

Career

Following his studies in London, Rouhani served as a professor at the Tehran College of Fine Arts and the Tehran Conservatoire of Music. He returned to the United Kingdom in 2000, settling in London.[1]

In 2014, his work Sheyda Fantasy was featured in the "Epic Persia" concert at Cadogan Hall, performed by the Docklands Sinfonia. The piece was described by critics as a "substantial" 20-minute work that displayed a "firmly directed creativity" and "would have delighted Rouhani’s teacher Michael Tippett."[3]

In 2016, he was commissioned by UNICEF for a "Peace" concert at London’s Barbican Centre. His music has been released globally via Hermes Records, an independent label specializing in contemporary Persian music.[4]
