Memedroid is an online platform and mobile application dedicated to the sharing and creation of internet memes. Developed originally by the Spanish company Novagecko, the app allows users to browse, rate, and upload memes and GIFs. Memedroid gained popularity in the early 2010s for its community-based ranking system and its combination of humorous content with a built-in meme generator. The service is available both as a website and through Android and iOS applications.[1][2]
History
Memedroid was created by Adrián Mediavilla and Álvaro Gómez, founders of the Spanish startup Novagecko, around 2012 in Palencia, Spain.[3] The platform rapidly grew in user base, reaching over one million downloads on Android within a few years of launch.[2] In later years, management of the app was associated with Coinbench, a company registered in the Netherlands, while the Novagecko brand continued to appear in older versions and app listings.[4]
Recognition
In 2014, Novagecko received the Premio El Suplemento for its development of mobile applications, recognizing Memedroid as one of the company’s flagship products.[5]
Availability
Memedroid is currently available worldwide via the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, with ongoing updates and a multilingual interface supporting English, Spanish, and other languages.[6]
