Meta-technics is a theoretical (ontological and phenomenological) framework within the philosophy of technology that analyzes the relationship between technological development, sensory perception, language, and thought. Proposed by the Venezuelan philosopher Ernesto Mayz Vallenilla in his 1990 work Fundamentos de la meta-técnica[1] (The Foundations of Meta-Technics), the theory posits that modern technological instruments —particularly those that artificially modify, extend, or replace human sensory perception— transform the modern human technical rationality (ratio technica). The concept has influenced discussions in phenomenology, metaphysics, philosophical anthropology, cybernetics, and transhumanism.[2]
Background
Mayz Vallenilla developed his philosophy of technology following postgraduate studies at the University of Freiburg, where he studied under Martin Heidegger.[3] Returning to Venezuela in 1953, he authored several works during the 1960s through the 1980s exploring human alienation and technical reason, including Del hombre y su alienación (1966), Técnica y humanismo (1972), Esbozo de una crítica de la razón técnica (1974), and Ratio Technica (1983). During this period, he also served as the founding rector of Simón Bolívar University.
Mayz Vallenilla observed that 20th-century technological developments —such as radar, sonar, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET)— act as synesthetic extensions of human senses. Influenced by Heideggerian phenomenology[4], he integrated these observations into Fundamentos de la meta-técnica (1990), which condensed his mature views on the subject.[5] The work was subsequently translated into five languages, with an English edition translated by philosopher Carl Mitcham in 2004.[6]
His work is supported by several of his previous essays on technology, but a strong influence of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology is also evident[7], particularly regarding the explanations of time-consciousness and the role of vision as a rational foundation.
In 1993, a research group was established at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IDEA)[8] in Caracas, led by Mayz Vallenilla and computer scientist Alberto Castillo Vicci[9], to study the implications of the theory. The group included researchers such as Alfredo Vallota, Ennodio Torres Cruz, and Douglas Jiménez, resulting in several published volumes and academic journal articles.
Core Concepts
Meta-technics argues that technology drives, particularly since the 20th century, an epistemological shift away from traditional, human-centered technical rationality (ratio technica). According to the theory, historical technical reason relies mainly on an "optical-luminic logos" —a mode of understanding and language primarily grounded in human visual perception and bodily experience.
The theory outlines a historical and phenomenological progression in three stages:
- Anthropocentric rationality: Conventional technical reason, limited to innate anthropomorphic, anthropocentric and geocentric capacities and sensory bounds prior to the 20th century.
- Sensory modification: 20th-century technological development that expands, modifies, integrates or mimics biological senses, initiating a departure from strictly anthropocentric foundations.
- Meta-technical logos: The emergence of a new form of rationality (meta-technics) that transcends human biological limits, giving rise to new and alternative forms of language, reason and alterity beyond conventional human sensory experience.
Mayz Vallenilla characterized this emerging transrationality not as irrational or arational, but rather an expanded and transformed rationality that surpasses and challenges the foundations and limits of conventional human rationality. Furthermore, to bridge conventional language with the new modes of perception generated by advanced technology, he introduced the concept of nootechnics[10] —a proposed discipline intended to translate between traditional human rationality and post-human sensory codes.
In this regard, meta-technics begins by analyzing the creation and development of technological instruments and devices that modify and replace human sensoria, thereby expanding and transforming humanity's relationship with alterity, and consequently enabling a knowledge and rationality beyond innate human capacities.[11] In this process, the optical (and spatial) foundation that has thus far prevailed in the organization of alterity —primarily through language— is gradually being replaced by a meta-technical interpretation of stimuli. This entails a new form of intelligibilization and ordering of alterity that would no longer be based on the typical human body and reason.
Academic Reception and Expansion
Members of the IDEA research group attempted to formalize and apply the theoretical concepts of meta-technics. They can be grouped into two approaches: technoscientific and philosophical.
Technoscientific and Mathematical Extensions
From an artificial Intelligence perspective, Alberto Castillo Vicci proposed the "Mayzian Test" as an alternative to the Turing Test. While the Turing Test evaluates observable behavioral intelligence, the Mayzian Test focuses on strong artificial intelligence and self-awareness, defined as an entity's ability to autonomously set its own goals and alter its initial programming.[12] Castillo Vicci also explored combining quantum, fuzzy, and Boolean logic to model translation devices (nootechnical artifacts) capable of interpreting meta-technical stimuli.[13] The mathematical formalizations of fuzzy logic for this framework were developed by Ennodio Torres Cruz.[14]
Also, from the perspective of the philosophy of science, quantum mechanics presents a non-intuitive reality where the standard laws of logic do not hold. According to Castillo Vicci, this could be leveraged as a opportunity to explore the transrationality of a meta-technical alterity, and for that very reason, the opportunity to explore an applied nootechnics.[15] That is to say, the translation of meta-technical perceptions into technical rationality would closely resemble the translation of quantum phenomena into classical-mechanics-based phenomenology.
On the other hand, within philosophy of mathematics, Douglas Jiménez examined modern mathematical developments —such as non-Euclidean geometry and abstract group theory— as examples of thought structures that operate independently of direct sensory observation while retaining traditional linguistic metaphors.[16] In this way, it posits that the most abstract mathematics can be considered meta-technical realities in themselves.
Philosophical and Anthropological Interpretation
Philosopher Alfredo Vallota situated meta-technics as a distinct critique of modernity. Unlike postmodern perspectives that focus on linguistic skepticism, Vallota argued that meta-technics presents a transhumanist framework wherein human subjects are transformed through technoscience rather than abandoned. Vallota also suggested that the meta-technical logos offers an alternative to traditional metaphysics by incorporating non-visual sensory modalities into the philosophy of experience.[17]
Vallota also explores the possibility that the meta-technical logos could replace or transform the traditional role of metaphysics in contemporary philosophy. He recognizes the current crisis of metaphysics, marked by a fading interest in the pursuit of meaning and the prevalence of empiricism and positivism, which have disqualified metaphysics as a valid form of knowledge, viewing it as more emotive than objective. In this regard, Vallota argued that meta-technics satisfies the conditions proposed by Jesús Conill to be considered a new metaphysics[18], offering a starting point to address its contemporary crisis and construct a new philosophical model capable of meeting future challenges.
Vallota also projected the implications of meta-technical theory into the field of anthropology. He explained that technoscience is neither morally neutral nor simply an instrument in the service of humanity; rather, it radically transforms human identity, modifying even its biological and cultural dimensions. In this way, the divide between the natural and the artificial becomes blurred. Humanity, therefore, must be understood as a being in flux, possessing a transrationality that will expand beyond traditional human limitations.[19] Meta-technics represents an evolutionary step within a broader process where humanity's capacity for creation expands, giving rise to an anthropogenesis that reflects the creative plasticity of a constantly evolving human species.[20]
Critique and Commentary on the Theory
The theory has received several critiques regarding its epistemological, ethical, and sociological assumptions.
Alfredo Vallota noted that if the traditional conception of perception —as the mental vision of an interior object common to all humans— is accepted, then meta-technical theory would face strong opposition. Because any technical modification to human senses would still produce an interior object perceived in a shared, human manner, limiting the possibility of a truly meta-human or transhuman logos.[21]
He also noted that the proposal of this meta-technical logos implies a radical shift in the doxic foundation supporting the human sensory perception, and that this proposal must be interpreted and contrasted with alternative theories to evaluate its validity and scope. In this regard, a second generation of researchers has begun to contrast and integrate meta-technical theory with theories of individuation and autopoiesis to explain, in a phenomenological and structural manner, how technological intervention in human beings modifies their biological and psychic becoming toward a new condition.[22]
Philosopher Dinu Garber Eainstein distinguished between a "relative thesis" and an "absolute thesis" in Mayz Vallenilla's work. Garber accepted the relative thesis —that meta-technics represents an expanded form of human reason— but rejected the absolute thesis, which proposes a completely non-human, autonomous rationality. Garber argued that an absolute meta-technical logos would be intellectually ungraspable and incapable of communication, contending that rationality must maintain a human center to remain meaningful.[23] Similarly to Douglas Jiménez's contribution, he criticizes this absolute thesis for seemingly assuming that reason necessarily depends on optical-luminic sensitivity and that abandoning it would alter intellectual function itself, thereby limiting a priori rationality and the capacity for intelligibility.
In the case of the philosopher Massimo Desiato, he argued that technological development alone does not guarantee a transition to a non-anthropocentric ethics. Desiato asserted that human self-interest and utility persist despite technological advancement, requiring a prior ethical framework to guide human behavior before any meta-technical ethics could occur in practice. In this sense, he noted that technological progress does not inherently eliminate self-interest, arguing that human behavior remains tied to utility and personal well-being during any transition toward a meta-technical state.
Thus, Desiato's critique maintains that although meta-technics offers a framework for a new ethic, it would not suffice on its own for this ethic to be realized in practice, since a prior ethical foundation is necessary to explain why alterity must be valued and anthropocentric human prejudices relinquished.[24]
Finally, the philosopher Federico Riu criticized Mayz Vallenilla’s underlying conception of technology. Riu argued that viewing technology as an autonomous phenomenon unfolding according to its internal logic ignores the historical, economic, and capitalist dynamics that drive technoscientific development. Riu also questioned the necessity of using transcendental Kantian and Heideggerian frameworks to analyze contemporary technology.[25]
