Mideye AB is a Swedish information security company that develops systems for multi-factor authentication, using mobile phones as an alternative to traditional hardware-based security tokens. The company’s technology has been used for secure login to enterprise systems, remote access services, and online applications.

The company is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and operates a subsidiary, Mideye Oy, in Espoo, Finland.[1]

History

Mideye traces its origins to 1999 as an innovation initiative within Ericsson Radio Systems, focused on reusing mobile phone infrastructure for secure user authentication. In June 2000, the project was transferred to Ericsson Business Innovation, and later that year Mideye AB was established as a subsidiary.[2]

Early Swedish technology press described Mideye as a spin-off from Ericsson Business Innovation that aimed to replace physical security devices such as smart cards and code generators with authentication based on ordinary mobile phones.[3]

In July 2003, Mideye became a privately held company following a management buy-out.[4]

In 2016, Mideye acquired Titansoft Oy, a Finnish company originating from the Tectia MobileID business unit of SSH Communications Security, strengthening its presence in Finland.[5]

Products and technology

Mideye’s authentication systems were described in early industry reporting as combining a username and password with a second authentication factor delivered to the user’s mobile phone, typically in the form of a one-time password (OTP).[6]

The company’s technology has been positioned as an alternative to hardware-based authentication devices by leveraging mobile networks and SIM-based security mechanisms.[2]

According to publicly available documentation, Mideye’s authentication server supports integration with enterprise systems using the RADIUS protocol (defined in RFC 2865), and supports multiple authentication methods, including mobile-delivered OTPs, app-based authentication, and hardware tokens.[7][8]

Mideye also distributes a mobile application, Mideye+, used as part of its authentication system.[9]

Partnerships and integrations

In the early 2000s, Mideye entered a partnership with Technology Nexus, under which Nexus acted as an integration partner and reseller of Mideye’s mobile-based authentication solution.[2][10]

In 2006, technology security news outlets reported that Mideye partnered with Cyber-Ark to provide mobile-phone-based two-factor authentication for secure access to enterprise data vault systems.[11]

Mideye AB is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and maintains a subsidiary in Espoo, Finland.[12]
