History

Mililab was founded in Tokyo in 2020 by Livert Lim and Mengfei Wu (also known as Miku), both alumni of Kengo Kuma and Associates.[1] The studio's practice spans architecture, interior design, and furniture, with furniture introduced as a dedicated discipline within the studio.[1]

The studio's first publicly released furniture collection, ENWA, was spawned in 2026. The collection's name, written in kanji as 円和, combines the characters for "circle" and "harmony."

Practice

Mililab maintains an architectural practice in parallel with its furniture work. The studio's architectural commissions include private residences and hospitality projects across the Asia-Pacific region, with active work in New Zealand, Taiwan, and Japan.[2] Most architectural projects are undertaken on a private basis and are not publicly disclosed.

The studio describes its furniture work as an extension of its architectural method: each piece is treated as a response to the room rather than as a stand-alone product.[1]

Design philosophy

Mililab approaches furniture design from an architectural perspective. The studio describes its method as subtraction: starting from a solid block and removing every sharp edge, joint, and ornament until only a continuous curve remains.[1]

Pieces in the ENWA collection are designed digitally in Tokyo through computational structural simulation, then manufactured under the studio's specification.[1] The Maru round dining table required several thousand structural iterations to develop, and the studio's chair, Yume, is structurally certified to ISO 7174.

ENWA collection

ENWA is a collection of eight furniture pieces produced primarily in solid North American white oak, with optional upholstery in Kvadrat Savanna, Dedar fabric, or Italian leather.[1] The collection is distributed direct-to-consumer with DDP shipping to 34 countries.

The studio's manufacturing process for the ENWA collection includes a double kiln-drying cycle: the wood is dried before assembly and dried again afterward to compensate for moisture introduced during glue application. This process locks the oak at approximately 10% moisture content, the point of greatest dimensional stability for white oak.[1]

Ishi stool

The Ishi stool, released in 2026, was developed as a derivative of the studio's Maru round dining table. According to a feature in Yanko Design, the founders became preoccupied with the curved leg form of Maru and elected to develop it into a standalone object. The stool was described in coverage as "equal parts furniture object and quiet design statement."[1]

The stool received editorial coverage in international design publications in April 2026.[3][1][4][5][6]
