Minthis Resort

Minthis Resort is a mixed-use hospitality, golf and residential development near Tsada in the Paphos District of Cyprus. The development incorporates an 18-hole golf course, accommodation, residential properties, wellness facilities, restaurants and cultural spaces. The contemporary development was led by Pafilia Property Developers, working with international design practices including Woods Bagot; Pafilia identifies WATG as responsible for the overall masterplan and Woods Bagot for design and architecture.[1][2][3]

The resort developed around an existing golf course and was designed by British golf-course architect Donald Steel in the 1990s and was subsequently redesigned and renovated by Mackenzie & Ebert.[4][5]

Location

The resort is located near the village of Tsada in the Paphos District of western Cyprus, in the hills northeast of the city of Paphos and forms part of the rural landscape surrounding the Ezousa Valley [1]. The resort is set inland from the Mediterranean coast within the wine-producing region of Paphos, in a landscape characterised by vineyards, olive groves and mountainous terrain.[2]

The resort lies approximately 13 km from Paphos Harbour, placing it within driving distance of the city's coastal area while retaining an inland hillside setting. Paphos International Airport is approximately 19 km from the resort, with road distances varying depending on the route.

The site occupies elevated terrain in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Sources describing the development place Minthis at approximately 550 metres above sea level, substantially higher than the coastal areas of Paphos.[6][3] Its elevated position provides views across the surrounding countryside and, from parts of the development, towards the Mediterranean.[3]

Minthis is situated within a large rural site outside Tsada. Sources from Pafilia and Woods Bagot describe the property as occupying a hillside setting within a protected natural landscape. The wider Minthis development covers approximately 5,000,000 square metres, with the planning and architecture intended to respond to the site's existing landscape and natural features.[2][3]

The historic Stavros tis Minthis monastery is located within the site beside the golf course. The monastery and surrounding area form part of a rural route documented by Cyprus's official tourism authority, which places the site close to Tsada and within the agricultural landscape north-east of Paphos.[7]

Development and architecture

The development of Minthis combines hospitality and residential uses with the pre-existing golf course and surrounding landscape.

The vision for the contemporary development of Minthis was conceived by Pafilia Property Developers, which led the creation and evolution of the resort in collaboration with international design partners including Woods Bagot.[1][3] Pafilia identifies WATG as responsible for the overall masterplan and Woods Bagot as responsible for design and architecture, with Woods Bagot's work shaping much of the resort's contemporary built environment.[2][3]

Architectural publications have noted the project's use of forms and materials influenced by traditional Cypriot architecture. The development includes pitched-roof structures, stone, timber and landscaped external spaces arranged around a central village-style area.[1][8]

The resort's spa was also designed by Woods Bagot. Architectural coverage of the building has described its planted roofs, exposed concrete, timber interiors and central courtyard, with the building arranged to respond to views across the surrounding landscape.[8]

The residential component comprises a range of Residences, Villas and Suites/apartments, designed in different configurations across the resort. These include detached residences arranged around private courtyards, two- and three-bedroom villas, single-level villas, and two-bedroom apartments offered in ground-floor, first-floor and duplex layouts. [9][6][10] Developments such as The Ridge and Ridge Green feature two- and three-bedroom villas, while Lofos incorporates apartments, duplex apartments and single-level villas.[6][10] Individual residential designs include Callisto, Asteria, Harmonia and Artemis, alongside villa designs such as Hesperides and Aura.[9][6]

Residential community

Alongside its hospitality facilities, Minthis has developed as a permanent residential community, with privately owned residences, villas and apartments distributed across the resort. Pafilia Property Developers state that its residential developments attract buyers from a range of international markets, while independent overseas-property coverage has described Minthis as a long-term home for some owners as well as a base for residents who divide their time between Cyprus and other countries.[11]

The community includes Cypriot and international property owners, with homes used both as principal residences and as seasonal residences. The resort's central Plateia, Golf Club, restaurants, spa, sporting facilities and programme of cultural and social events have been developed to provide shared facilities and meeting places for residents as well as hotel guests.

Minthis is also marketed internationally to entrepreneurs, business owners and senior executives considering residence in Cyprus. Property-market sources have specifically identified these groups among the resort's international residential audience, although independently verified demographic figures for the occupations or nationalities of Minthis residents have not been published.

Golf course

The golf course at Minthis was originally designed by golf architect Donald Steel and opened during the 1990s.[4][5][12]

The Golf Club includes a clubhouse, Pro Shop and Golf Academy, with individual and group tuition offered by PGA professionals.[12] Practice facilities include a driving range, putting and chipping greens and a three-hole academy area.[[12]The driving range is positioned on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding countryside, with nearby areas for putting, pitching and chipping practice.[11]

The course was later renovated by the golf-course architecture practice Mackenzie & Ebert. It is an 18-hole par-72 course and incorporates the existing terrain and vegetation around the historic monastery.[4][5][12]

Minthis Golf Club has also participated in environmental programmes administered by the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf. GEO certification reports record the club's certification and independent assessment of its environmental and resource-management practices.[13]

In 2025, Minthis was placed 20th in the Leading Courses ranking of golf resorts in Europe. The ranking combines golfer reviews with accommodation ratings and should be understood as a consumer-based ranking rather than an official sporting classification.

Minthis Golf Club also operates a membership programme and hosts club competitions and other golf events. [12]Cyprus's official tourism portal identifies Minthis as one of the island's golf clubs and notes the course's relationship with the surrounding Natura 2000 landscape.[5]

Hospitality and facilities

The hospitality component of Minthis includes suites and villas, restaurants, a spa and wellness facilities, sporting facilities and the golf club. The resort has been covered by international travel and design publications including Wallpaper*, while the MICHELIN Guide includes Minthis in its hotel selection for Paphos. [1]

In a 2025 travel feature about Cyprus, Condé Nast Traveler identified Minthis as one of the accommodation options in the Paphos region and described it as being situated in a nature reserve outside the city centre.

Amaracus Restaurant

Amaracus is a restaurant located within the Plateia, the central dining and social area of Minthis Resort. Its name is derived from amaracus, a reference to the wild oregano found in the surrounding area. The restaurant focuses on Mediterranean cuisine, with dishes influenced by Cypriot ingredients and locally sourced produce.[14][15]

The restaurant forms part of Plateia, the central dining and social area of Minthis. Its menu makes use of ingredients sourced from Cyprus as well as produce grown within the resort's estate.[14]

In January 2025, the Cyprus Mail published an independent review of Amaracus, describing it as a fine-dining Mediterranean restaurant at Minthis Resort and highlighting several dishes from its menu. [15]

Bar-M

Bar-M is a cocktail bar located within Plateia, the central dining and social area of Minthis Resort. Opened in 2022, the bar forms part of the resort's food and beverage offering alongside Amaracus and other venues within Plateia.

The bar focuses on infusion-based cocktails, alongside a selection of wines, champagnes, sharing plates and light dishes. It is also used as a venue for live music, DJ performances and other evening events held at the resort.[16][17]

Clubhouse

The Clubhouse is located alongside the golf course at Minthis Resort and serves as the principal social and dining facility associated with Minthis Golf Club. It includes a restaurant, bar and terrace overlooking the golf greens and surrounding landscape.[14][12]

The Clubhouse serves breakfast and lunch and is used by both golfers and other resort visitors. Its terrace overlooks parts of the golf course, while the restaurant focuses on dishes using local and seasonal ingredients.[14][12]

Spa

The Minthis Spa is a wellness facility located near the centre of the resort and was designed by international architecture practice Woods Bagot. [18] The two-storey building contains approximately 2,100 square metres of public wellness facilities and is positioned on a hillside overlooking the Ezousa Valley and the historic Stavros tis Minthis monastery.[18]

Facilities include eight treatment rooms, a 25-metre heated indoor swimming pool, a thermal spa pool, gym, yoga room and relaxation areas. The spa also incorporates thermal suites and treatment programmes influenced by local herbs and traditional Mediterranean wellness practices.

Architecturally, the building uses planted roofs and a low-profile form intended to integrate with the surrounding landscape. A central courtyard planted with aromatic species forms part of the interior arrangement and reflects the resort's broader emphasis on its natural setting.[18]

Sports Facilities

Minthis includes a dedicated Sports Ground providing facilities for a range of outdoor recreational activities. The complex comprises four tennis courts, two padel courts, a multifunctional court and a mini-football pitch. [19][20]

The multifunctional court can accommodate activities including basketball and volleyball, while the tennis and padel facilities are also listed through the Playtomic sports-booking platform. [19][20]

Additional recreational facilities across the resort include an outdoor fitness park, as well as designated routes for walking and hiking. [19] The resort's nature trail extends for approximately 5 km on its longer route and passes through the surrounding protected landscape. [16] Outdoor yoga sessions and fitness activities are also organised within the resort. [16][19]

Culture and Cultural activities

Minthis is also used as a venue for arts, music and cultural events, with a particularly active programme during the summer months. Events are held across several areas of the resort, including the Minthis Amphitheatre, Plateia, Bar-M and the Golf Club. The seasonal programme includes live music, DJ performances, dining events, golf competitions and other social gatherings.[17][21]

The Minthis Music Festival, a classical music festival held at the resort's outdoor amphitheatre, developed from a series of classical music events at the property. The 2025 festival included international performers and ensembles, and the festival returned in 2026.

Beyond the annual festival, Minthis maintains a broader programme of regular summer entertainment. In 2026, this included the recurring Summer Social series at Plateia, featuring live performances by different musicians, alongside summer aperitif evenings and other music-led dining events extending through August and September.[21] This programme means that cultural activity at the resort is not limited to the main music festival but forms part of a wider seasonal calendar of events.

The resort has additionally hosted temporary visual-art exhibitions at its gallery.

Seasonal Grape Harvest

Viticulture forms part of the seasonal activities at Minthis. During September and October, guests and members of the Minthis community can participate in the annual grape harvest, gathering grapes grown within the resort. Minthis also produces its own wines from vines planted across the property, continuing the wider viticultural tradition of the Paphos region and Cyprus.

Stavros tis Minthis Monastery

At the heart of the resort lies the historic Stavros tis Minthis Monastery, a 12th-century monastery near Tsada.[7] According to local tradition, the chapel's name is associated with a monk hiding a sacred cross among mint bushes to protect it from invaders.[7] The monastery has been preserved and restored and remains an important historic feature of the site.[22] Minthis takes its name from the monastery, reflecting the development's connection with the history and landscape of the area.[22][3]

Sustainability

Environmental management of the golf course has been independently assessed through the GEO Certified programme.

Minthis Golf Club first achieved GEO certification in 2019 and has subsequently undergone further certification assessments. GEO Foundation documentation covers areas including habitat management, water use, resource conservation and community initiatives.[13]

Natura 2000

Minthis is situated within a landscape that forms part of the Natura 2000 network, the European Union's system of protected areas established for the conservation of important habitats and species. [16][3] The wider Ezousa Valley includes the Koilada Ezousas Natura 2000 site (CY4000021), designated as a Special Protection Area under the EU Birds Directive.

Awards and recognition

Minthis has received recognition in the hospitality, golf, sustainability, architecture and wellness sectors.

In hospitality and golf, Minthis Resort was named Cyprus's Best Golf Hotel at the World Golf Awards in 2023 and 2024, while Minthis Golf Club was named Cyprus's Best Golf Course in 2022 and 2024. The World Golf Awards' official results confirm both the hotel and golf-course awards.

The golf club has also received recognition for its environmental management. In 2019, Minthis Golf Club received the IAGTO Sustainability Award for Resource Efficiency, and in 2021 it received the Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Award as part of the IAGTO Sustainability Awards, organised in partnership with the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf.

Further sustainability recognition followed at the 2023 Sustainable Luxury Awards, where Minthis Resort received awards for Most Sustainable Luxury Spa Resort – Global, Most Sustainable Luxury Golf Resort – Continent, and Most Sustainable Luxury Lifestyle Resort – Region. Minthis Spa was separately recognised for Most Sustainable Luxury Spa & Stay – Global and Most Sustainable Luxury Day Spa – Country.

The architecture and design of Minthis have also received international recognition. In 2024, the Woods Bagot-designed development was shortlisted in the Completed Buildings – Mixed Use category of the World Architecture Festival Awards. The same year, Minthis was shortlisted in the Resort category at the AHEAD Europe Awards, an international programme focused on hospitality experience and design.

In wellness, Minthis was named Cyprus's Best Wellness Retreat at the World Spa Awards in 2023 and again in 2025.
