Modanisa is a Turkish e-commerce company specialising in modest fashion, headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey. Founded in May 2011 by Kerim Türe, it is one of the world's largest online retailers of modest fashion, offering more than 70,000 products from over 650 brands to customers in over 140 countries.[1]

History

Modanisa was founded on Mother's Day in May 2011 by Kerim Türe and co-founders in Istanbul, Turkey. The company was established to address an unmet demand for modest clothing options available online to Muslim women worldwide.

In 2016, Modanisa co-founded the International Modest Fashion Week, which held its inaugural event in Istanbul. The event brought together designers, buyers and media from across the Muslim world, helping to establish Turkey as a hub for modest fashion globally. Subsequent editions were held in London (2017) and Dubai (2017).[2]

By 2019, the company reported more than 150 million annual visitors to its platform, with approximately 80% of its sales generated from international markets outside Turkey, making it one of Turkey's leading e-export companies.[1] The company has pursued a goal of becoming Turkey's first technology unicorn — a privately held startup valued at over US$1 billion.[1][3]

Business model

Modanisa operates as an online marketplace connecting modest fashion brands and retailers with consumers globally. The platform offers clothing, accessories, and cosmetics catering primarily to Muslim women who choose to dress modestly, including hijab, abaya, and conservative womenswear. As of 2022, the company offered more than 70,000 products from over 650 brands across more than 140 countries.[1]

Funding

Modanisa has received multiple rounds of investment from international financial institutions and venture capital funds:

  • Aslanoba Capital – early-stage investor
  • European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) – invested in March 2019, adding to an existing position in the company[1]
  • Goldman Sachs, EBRD and Wamda Capital – participated in a US$20 million funding round in July 2022[1]
  • STC Ventures (venture capital fund of Saudi Telecom Group) – US$5.5 million investment[4]
