Modrinth is an open-source modding platform focused on Minecraft, allowing creators to publish and players to discover mods, plugins, data packs, shaders, resource packs, and modpacks. It also offers a desktop launcher, known as the Modrinth App, and a server hosting service. The platform is frequently cited alongside CurseForge as one of the two major hosting sites for Minecraft: Java Edition content.^[1]

Modrinth was founded in December 2020 by Jai Agrawal, a teenager at the time, who began the project within the community around the Fabric mod loader as a response to limitations of existing mod-hosting platforms.^[2] The site is built on an open-source, Rust-based backend, and its source code is publicly available.

In February 2023, Modrinth raised approximately $1.2 million in pre-seed funding led by Makers Fund, with additional investors including Ryan Johnson, Stephen Cole, Pim de Witte, Chris Lee, and Andreas Thorstensson.^[3] In April 2024, the company announced it had returned the remaining approximately $800,000 of that investment to its backers and reduced its team size, opting to pursue slower, self-sustaining growth instead.^[4]

In June 2023, a malware campaign known as "fractureiser" affecting mods hosted on the rival platform CurseForge prompted some members of the Minecraft modding community to reconsider their use of that site, a factor some commentators have linked to Modrinth's subsequent growth.^[5]

On June 15, 2026, Agrawal announced that Modrinth had been acquired by Spark Universe, a Minecraft-focused development studio founded in 2017 and best known for creating the Essential mod. The deal, according to Agrawal, had closed in February 2026 but was not publicly disclosed until June.^[6][7] Following the acquisition, officials stated that Modrinth would remain fully open-source, would continue to operate as an independent entity with its own team, and would not merge with Essential.^[6] Agrawal said his decision to step back was driven by increasing academic commitments, and that he chose Spark Universe's founders, Raf and Flo, as stewards of the platform after building a relationship with them since 2023.^[2]

Modrinth hosts several categories of user-generated content for Minecraft: Java Edition, including mods, server plugins, data packs, shader packs, resource packs, and modpacks.^[8] Its open API allows third-party launchers, such as Prism Launcher and ATLauncher, to integrate directly with the platform.^[8][9] The Modrinth App is a companion desktop launcher that supports mod installation, instance management, and, as of 2025, integrated server hosting.^[10]

Modrinth's monetization approach differs from that of its main competitor, CurseForge. Modrinth operates its own in-house Creator Monetization Program for distributing advertising and subscription revenue to project authors,^[8] whereas CurseForge, which, like the payment platform Tebex, is owned by Overwolf, moved its premium subscription billing to Tebex.^[11]
