The Morisco Movement, or Morisco Empire, is a grassroots movement of academics, professionals, and entrepreneurs that reclaims their Moorish heritage (historical and contemporary).
The group's focus is on Latin America, in particular Central America[1] where it is styled Consejo Económico y Cultural Morisco de Guatemala (English: Moorisch Economic and Cultural Council of Guatemala) and the Benelux[2] where its called the Moorisch Economic and Cultural Council of The Netherlands (Dutch: Moorsche Economische en Culturele Raad der Nederlanden, French: Conseil économique et culturel maure des Pays-Bas) with 'The Netherlands' refering to the historical region Low Countries which applied to the landmass where currently The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg are located.
The group identifies with the term Morisco (associated with the Hispanic world) as a reference to the term Blackamoor or Moor (which was commonly used before the term 'Black people' became standardised).[3] The movement agrees to distance themselves from the negative associations of Blackness generated by the Black Codes of Louis XIV in 1685 (which the Republic of France overturned in 2026 under President Emmanuel Macron[4]).
As a community building movement, aimed at establishing local and international sustainable trade, the Moriscos have no political alignment nor any claim to sovereignty (nor are they part of any separatism). [5]
