Multiplayer Piano (MPP) is an online multiplayer piano platform that allows users to play a virtual piano simultaneously with other users while communicating through text chat. Users can create or join rooms and interact with other participants while playing.
History
Creation
Multiplayer Piano was created by Brandon Lockaby and was listed on Google's Chrome Experiments website in February 2012. Google described the project as a multiplayer piano built using JavaScript and Socket.IO, with the Web Audio API used for audio in Google Chrome.[1]
Later in 2012, Google included Multiplayer Piano among Chrome experiments demonstrating Web Audio technology and described it as allowing users to compose music together.[2]
Development
Multiplayer Piano developed into a room-based multiplayer platform centered on collaborative piano playing and text communication. By 2020, users could participate in public and private rooms and use features including MIDI support, audio recording, multiple instrument sounds and synthesizer controls. Room owners also had moderation and configuration controls.[3]
The platform also developed a community of users who created third-party software. These projects included bots that interacted with the site's chat and music systems and programs capable of automatically playing MIDI files.[3]
Community and third-party projects
Multiplayer Piano's room system supported communities centered on music, social interaction and programming. A 2020 discussion of the platform described users creating bots and MIDI tracks within rooms and using bots to communicate with other users.[4]
MPPClone
In 2020, a separate community project known as MPPClone was created as an alternative implementation of Multiplayer Piano. Community documentation distinguishes MPPClone from the original Multiplayer Piano project and states that it was created around August 2020.[5]
MPPClone later became associated with the MultiplayerPiano.net domain. Accounts of the relationship between MPPClone and the original Multiplayer Piano project have primarily been documented by members of the Multiplayer Piano community.[5]
Later development
Community sources report that the original Multiplayer Piano project changed ownership in 2020. The circumstances of the change and the subsequent relationship between the original project and MPPClone have been discussed within the Multiplayer Piano community.[5]
The current Multiplayer Piano website describes the platform as having been established in 2012 and identifies Daniel Calder as its founder. The current site focuses on online piano playing and includes support for MIDI functionality.[6]
Features
Multiplayer Piano provides a virtual piano that can be played by multiple users simultaneously. Users can communicate through text chat and participate in rooms with other users. The platform supports computer keyboard input and MIDI devices. Other documented features include multiple instrument sounds, audio recording and synthesizer controls.[3]
