Naples Pier is a historic pier and tourist destination in Naples, Florida. According to the city of Naples, it receives 1 million visitors a year.
History
The Pier was originally built in 1888 as a freight and passenger dock by Walter N. Haldermann, the founder of Naples, and Captain James Canty.[1] The pier was designed to accommodate steamboats, making it easier to load and unload cargo and passengers and contributing to the development of the region.[2] It has been repeatedly damaged by hurricanes, including in 1910, 1926, 1944, and 1960. In 2015 it was reconstructed out of Brazilian walnut[3], and in 2017, Hurricane Irma damaged the structure. In 2022 it was severely damaged after Hurricane Ian, and the entire structure will be replaced.[4] It is estimated to cost almost 1.4 million dollars, and completion is expected to take about a year and a half. It will also have Polynesian roof lines.[5] Currently a small structure is still accessible.
Shark fishing off the pier was banned in 1963.[6]
Structure & Usage
The pier extended 1000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, before its severe destruction by Hurricane Ian. Historically, the pier included numerous concession stands along the pier, alongside restrooms and showers. It was also possible to fish off the pier, and watch wildlife, such as dolphins, and manatees, and seagulls. It also has a webcam.[6]
Feeding the birds is prohibited.[3]
