National Time & Signal Corporation is an American manufacturer of clocks based in Wixom, Michigan.[1] The company was founded in 1877 in Chicago as the Hahl Clock Company. It was later reorganized and incorporated under its current name in 1930.
History
National Time & Signal stretched its roots to 1877 when the Hahl Clock Company in Chicago, Illinois was founded, and Augustus Hahl introduced the world's first pneumatically controlled master clock system.[2] In 1918, Rolland Fulton, a former salesperson for the company, purchased the former Hahl assets and relocated to Detroit, founding the Time Systems Company.[1]
In 1930, the Time Systems Company was reorganized and was officially incorporated as the National Time and Signal Corporation, expanding its offerings to include industrial timing systems for Detroit's growing automotive industry.[1]
In 1990, the National Time & Signal Corporation invented the world's first clock system that could operate on just two wires; prior to that, clock systems relied on a 3-wire setup and required long 12-hour reset cycles.[1]
In 1999, National Time & Signal relocated its headquarters and primary manufacturing operations from Oak Park, Michigan, to Wixom, Michigan.[1] Prior to the 1999 relocation, the company had been operating out of its Oak Park facility at 21800 Wyoming Avenue, which it originally moved into in 1945.[1]
On August 3, 2016, Signal Communications recalled 3,500 National Time & Signal 541S fire alarm pull stations due to a hazard when the pull handle on the fire alarm pull station can break when manually pulled and fail to activate the alarm system.[3][4] These units were installed primarily in educational and commercial facilities throughout Michigan.[3] They were produced and sold between October 2005 and April 2007 and were manufactured in China.[3]
