Njerae (born Njeri Mwengi) is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, and producer known for her emotive blend of Afro-indie,[1] R&B, and soul. Born and raised in Mombasa, she has become one of the most prominent female voices in East African contemporary music, earning the popular nickname Kenya's Lover Girl [2]for her introspective songwriting on love, heartbreak, and self-worth. She is signed to Universal Music Group East Africa and was named to Apple Music's Africa Rising Class of 2025.
Early Life and Education
Njerae was born in Mombasa, Kenya, into a household with a strong appreciation for music, where R&B was a regular part of family life. She began singing at the age of three, and throughout her school years participated in the Kenya Music Festival for approximately twelve years, competing in classical music categories. Despite the formal, technical nature of festival competition, these early experiences gave her a rigorous musical foundation.
It was during high school that she discovered songwriting as a creative outlet. As an introverted teenager, writing became her way of processing and articulating personal experiences. She also took up the guitar during this period.
After completing high school, she enrolled at Sauti Academy in Nairobi, a music development programme associated with the celebrated Kenyan band Sauti Sol, which had been a significant artistic influence on her. The academy exposed her not only to music craft but also to the business side of the industry, and it was there that she committed fully to a professional music career. She subsequently studied Psychology and Performing Arts at university, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology. She has expressed a long-term aspiration to open a counselling centre where music is used as a therapeutic tool.
Career
Early Career (2016–2021)
Njerae began releasing music professionally around 2016, initially under different names before settling on her stage name. Her early releases were intimate, guitar-driven works that established a signature sound centred on personal emotional experience. A notable early milestone was the song "Anayefaa" (around 2019–2020), which she has cited as the moment she truly understood what kind of musician she wanted to be.
Her approach to songwriting shifted significantly after advice from fellow Kenyan artist Bensoul, who encouraged her to write from her own perspective rather than about others, a turning point she credits with defining her artistic voice.
Breakthrough (2022)
Njerae's mainstream breakthrough came with her debut album Unintentional (2022), a 12-track project widely described as an emotional guide to navigating a breakup. The album accumulated over 10 million streams, with its standout single "Aki Sioni" becoming a defining song of her career, amassing over 6 million streams on its own. The album established her within Kenya's growing Afro-indie scene and earned her a dedicated audience across East Africa.
Growing Recognition (2023)
In 2023, Njerae continued building momentum with the single "OTD" (On The Daily), which blended Afro-fusion elements and became one of the most-discussed Kenyan songs of the year, appearing on People Daily's end-of-year Songs of the Year list. She also explored a more mainstream R&B direction with singles including "Valhalla", demonstrating her range as an artist.
Signing with Universal Music Group (2024)[3]
In August 2024, Universal Music Group East Africa announced the signing of Njerae, a significant milestone that marked her entry into the major label system. The deal came about through a connection with UMG-signed artist DTX, whose collaboration with Njerae caught the label's attention. Despite initial scepticism about major label relationships, she has described the partnership as the best decision of her career.
Her first release under the UMG banner was "Aki Sioni (Magik Mix)", a remix of her signature track produced in collaboration with Nigerian producer WonderMajik, which introduced more vibrant, summery production while preserving the song's emotional core.
Also in 2024, she released the EP Out With the Old, a collaborative project featuring Kenyan artists Watendawili, Lisa Oduor-Noah, Mbithi, and Maali. The same year she released the single "Baki Pekee Yako" featuring Watendawili, and "Nyumbani".
She was also nominated for the Africa Choice Awards (ACA) in the Underground Artist of the Year category in 2024.
2025: Apple Music Africa Rising and Four Letter Word
2025 marked Njerae's most high-profile year to date. She was named to Apple Music's Africa Rising Class of 2025, making her the first East African artist to receive the honour since Nikita Kering in 2020, and notably part of a streak of East African women receiving the recognition.
On Valentine's Day 2025, she released the EP Four Letter Word,[4] a four-track project exploring the full emotional spectrum of romantic relationships. The EP was produced in collaboration with Wondamagik, Vic West, and Kobby Worldwide, and featured the singles "Beg for It" and "Decide"; the latter incorporating elements of Kikuyu language and blending her acoustic roots with club-influenced production. The EP was described by Njerae as a return to her musical roots while also incorporating the experimental sounds she explored in 2023–2024.
A deluxe edition, Four Letter Word (Deluxe), followed later in 2025, adding four new tracks including "Colors" (featuring Bensoul) and "Gone" (featuring Canadian artist Preston Pablo). Further 2025 releases included "FAR AWAY" (with KayCyy).
She has also been recognised as a Spotify EQUAL Africa Ambassador, a programme spotlighting female artists across the continent.
Artistry
Njerae's music is broadly categorised as Afro-indie, with strong influences from R&B, soul, and acoustic folk. [5]Her songwriting is characterised by personal vulnerability and emotional precision. She has described her music as giving voice to thoughts that people are afraid to express aloud[6]. She writes almost exclusively from lived experience, and her work frequently explores the nuances of romantic relationships: longing, intimacy, self-doubt, and loss.
She plays guitar and is involved in production on her projects. As she has grown as an artist, her sound has expanded from stripped-down acoustic arrangements to incorporate more layered contemporary production, though she has remained anchored to emotionally direct songwriting.
On the business side, Njerae has spoken candidly about her approach to music as a long-term investment, comparing songs to property whose value compounds over time. She has also been an advocate for the growth of Kenyan music domestically, noting that home-grown music still competes with foreign covers in many local venues, though she believes the tide is shifting.
