NosTale is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by the South Korean company Entwell and released in 2006. The game is published in Europe and other regions by Gameforge.[1]

The game features an anime-inspired art style, real-time combat, and a class-based progression system combined with a transformation mechanic known as Specialist Cards. Since its release in 2006, NosTale continues to receive regular content updates, expansions, and seasonal events.

Gameplay

NosTale is played from a third-person perspective in a persistent online world. Players complete quests, defeat enemies, and interact with other players through cooperative and competitive systems.

Character progression is based on experience points gained from combat and quests. The game world is divided into story-driven chapters called "Acts", each introducing new areas, enemies, and gameplay systems.

The game features both player-versus-environment (PvE) and player-versus-player (PvP) gameplay, as well as instanced content such as Time-Space missions and raids.[2]

Features

  • Pets and partners: Companion system where CPU-controlled allies assist in combat.
  • Raids: Cooperative boss encounters requiring coordination between players.
  • Family system: Guild-like social system for group play.
  • Time-Space missions: Instanced challenges with objectives and rewards.
  • Mini-games: Activities such as fishing and side challenges.

Monetisation

NosTale follows a free-to-play model. Players can access the full game without purchase, while optional items are available through a premium currency system. These items typically provide cosmetic customization, convenience features, or progression boosts.

Events and community

NosTale features frequent seasonal events as well as limited-time raids and quests. These events often include special rewards, cosmetics, and progression bonuses.[3]

In addition to in-game events, activities such as fan art competitions and livestreams hosted by the publisher, and promotional campaigns. Gameforge also operates special event servers such as NosFire, which provide accelerated progression and temporary gameplay environments. These servers allow players to quickly advance characters, which can later be transferred to permanent servers at the end of the event period.[4]

Character Classes and Specialists

Every player starts their journey as an Adventurer. Upon reaching Combat Level 15 and Job Level 20, players can choose to advance into one of the three main classes: Swordsman, Archer, or Sorcerer. A fifth class, Martial Artist, can be unlocked later under specific conditions.

The defining feature of NosTale is the Specialist Card (SP) system. Equipping an SP card completely transforms the character's appearance, elemental attribute, and skill set. The game features four primary elemental attributes: Fire, Water, Light, and Dark. While most SP cards are class-specific, there are several generic cards available to all classes.
