OSUDemocracy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting intercultural democracy in Canada and to maintaining support for Ukraine until its victory and full reconstruction.[1]

The organization was founded on February 28, 2022, by Nataliya Senyuk, together with local activists and volunteers in Canada’s National Capital Region.[2][3]

Its stated mission is to inform the public about the impact of geopolitical developments on everyday life and to counter disinformation by providing evidence‑based information to citizens and decision‑makers in the Capital Region and beyond.[4][5]

OSUDemocracy pursues this mission through a weekly bilingual newsletter in English and French,[6] anti‑disinformation campaigns,[7] social media activity,[8] and intercultural pro‑democracy events.[9][10]

The organization also presents annual awards recognizing Canadians who contribute to the advancement of democratic values.[11]

History

OSUDemocracy was established in response to the full‑scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and public demand in the Ottawa–Gatineau region for credible information on how to support Ukraine and Ukrainians.[12]

The initiative originally functioned as a Facebook group named Ottawa Supports Ukraine – Democracy, which later evolved into the nonprofit organization known as OSUDemocracy in English and OSUDémocratie in French.[13]

In its early phase, the organization disseminated practical information for volunteers assisting Ukrainian newcomers fleeing the war and collaborated with local organizations including YMCA, Café Ukraine, Volunteers of Gatineau, Galeries Aylmer, OCCSC, and other community groups.[14][15]

In 2023, OSUDemocracy became a registered organization in Canada.[16]

Activities

Intercultural Pro‑Democracy Events

Since 2022, OSUDemocracy has organized more than 30 rallies and intercultural pro‑democracy events in the National Capital Region.

These events included art exhibitions, film screenings, public discussions, performances, and multicultural food.

Some events were hosted in partnership with Gallery Aylmer, Impératif Français, Café Ukraine, SAW Gallery, LATCA Association, and others.[17]

Anti‑Disinformation Campaigns

OSUDemocracy engaged in anti‑disinformation efforts through letters to decision‑makers,[18][19] public petitions, and engagement with media institutions.[20]

The campaign opposing the screening of Russians at War received international media attention.[21][22][23]

Visibility of Ukraine in Public Space

OSUDemocracy advocated for raising the Ukrainian flag in Gatineau to commemorate lives lost in Ukraine.[24]

Such commemorations took place in 2023, 2024, and 2025.[25][26][27]

On February 28, 2025, OSUDemocracy received formal recognition from Greg Fergus, Member of Parliament for Hull–Aylmer and Speaker of the House of Commons at the time.

Additional recognitions were reported in 2023, 2024, and 2025 from Canadian municipal officials and civil society organizations.

Partnerships

OSUDemocracy’s anti‑disinformation activities are conducted in collaboration with various organizations and individuals, including former Impératif Français president Jean‑Paul Perreault, former Gatineau councillor Louis Sabourin, the Baltic Canadian Council, LATCA Association, writer Jamieson Findlay, communications specialist Cara Waters, librarian Natalia Traoré, the Ukrainian Club of Montreal, and the Association ukrainienne de Lévis.
