The Sodatete! Mushiking is among the oddpets most sought after by collectors and appreciated by fans.

An Oddpet or Odd Pet is any handheld virtual pet that is not among the two most popular virtual pet series made by Bandai Namco, namely the Tamagotchi and Digimon franchises[1].

The term is informal, used by fans and collectors. No brand advertises their product as an Oddpet, but Bandai Namco is so strongly associated with virtual pet handhelds (tamagotchi is a proprietary eponym for the genre as a whole) that most collectors categorize virtual pets as either "Bandai" or "Other".

Many oddpets made directly after the launch of the tamagotchi in 1996 were dupes of the original tamagotchi, but over time as other brands such as Sega,Tiger Electronics, and Konami began developing unique spins on the genre, they quickly diversified into many subgenres, differentiating themselves with various gimmicks. Many companies creating Oddpets during the late nineties have since disappeared, making it difficult to find information on their products. A significant amount of Oddpets were manufactured in China for Japanese companies, but as the trend became globalized, companies in other countries joined in.

As oddpets were manufactured by many companies, some of which no longer exist, in the very early days of the internet, the information about them is not as complete as it is with the more established Bandai virtual pets. Fansites such as the oddpet database and tamenagerie provide partial records of brand names, packaging, and user experiences of different kinds of oddpet, including records of "ROMS" (referring to the programming of the device) and "Shells" (referring to the casing, colour, and design of the device). As some companies appear to have shared shell manufacturers, the content of a device can sometimes be difficult to estimate based on the outwards appearance alone. Oddpets are also discussed on forum sites like Tamatalk or in discord communities focused on virtual pets.

While originally marketed largely towards children, virtual pets are now a popular form of nostalgic collectable for some adults, and oddpets can sometimes command high prices due to the rarity and fan appreciation of some models.
