OpenOrigins is a technology company founded in London in 2021 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, that develops infrastructure for verifying the provenance, authenticity, and integrity of digital content. Its technology is designed to establish cryptographic proof of the origin of media at the moment of creation, enabling independent verification without reliance on a central authority.[1][2] The company's products address the growing challenge posed by synthetic media — AI-generated images, audio, and video — which experts and institutions including NIST have warned is increasingly indistinguishable from authentic content at scale, and which detection-based approaches are structurally limited in addressing.[3]

Background

OpenOrigins was founded in 2021 in London by Dr. Manny Ahmed and Ari Abelson. Ahmed's doctoral research at the University of Cambridge focused on blockchain-based approaches to media authentication. Prior to founding OpenOrigins, he developed cryptographic infrastructure for whistleblower protection at news organisations, and held roles at nCipher Security and RKVST. He holds a master's degree from ETH Zurich. Abelson's background is in the analysis of information operations and disinformation campaigns. He has collaborated with technology companies and government bodies on efforts to counter online misinformation, and holds an MSc from the London School of Economics. He has previously worked with Moonshot CVE and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and contributed to projects commissioned by the UK Ministry of Defence and Meta.

Products

OpenOrigins offers three solutions — Source, Anchor, and Agents — each delivered primarily through SDKs and OEM integrations. The solutions are designed as onramps to Cambium, the company's underlying decentralised provenance infrastructure layer. Source is designed for content being captured in real time. It fuses device sensor data — including timestamp, GPS coordinates, gyroscopic data, 3D depth capture, and hardware attestation — into a tamper-evident manifest at the moment of capture, which is then anchored on the Cambium ledger. The 3D depth capture is specifically designed to detect picture-of-picture attacks, where a camera is used to photograph a screen displaying existing content. Intended use cases include field journalism, insurance claims verification, legal evidence, and whistleblowing. Anchor is designed for existing media libraries. It creates a cryptographic fingerprint for each asset in an archive and anchors those fingerprints on the Cambium ledger, so that any subsequent insertion or alteration of content is detectable against the original record. The solution is also designed to enable rights-holders to license verified, human-created content to AI developers as training data. OpenOrigins operates a data marketplace which, as of 2025, holds over three petabytes of licensable material. Agents provides immutable audit trails for AI systems, recording training and ingestion inputs at the point they enter a model and anchoring those records on Cambium so they can be independently reconstructed and verified. The solution is positioned in part as a compliance tool in the context of transparency and logging obligations under the EU AI Act.

OpenOrigins' Cambium protocol is designed to be compatible with the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) standard.

Funding

OpenOrigins has raised $7.25 million in total funding. In October 2024, the company announced a $4.5 million round led by Galaxy, a digital assets financial services firm, to support its global expansion.[2]

Partnerships

In June 2024, ITN (Independent Television News) announced a deal with OpenOrigins to anchor its video archive — spanning approximately 70 years and more than one million hours of footage — against AI manipulation, and to facilitate licensing of that content. ITN became the first UK news organisation to announce such an agreement.[4][5] Tami Hoffman, ITN's Director of News Distribution and Commercial Innovation, described the partnership as allowing ITN to "ringfence the archive from future threats — and reassure viewers and clients as synthetic media proliferates." Other reported customers and partners include CBC and RDT.
