Open OnDemand (also referred to by the shorthand OOD) is an open-source web portal and science gateway platform that provides browser-based access to supercomputers and other high-performance computing (HPC) resources. Rather than requiring users to connect via SSH, a VPN client, or a command-line job scheduler, Open OnDemand allows researchers, students, and other users to submit and monitor batch jobs, manage files, and launch interactive applications such as Jupyter, RStudio, MATLAB, and Visual Studio Code directly from a standard web browser.

The project is developed and maintained by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) in partnership with a global community of contributors, and has been funded primarily through grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

Supported platforms

Open OnDemand runs on a dedicated Linux "web node" that mediates browser access to one or more back-end HPC clusters, which need not run the same operating system as the web node.[1]

Server operating systems

As of version 4.2, the web node officially supports:[1]

Supported hardware architectures include x86_64 on all listed distributions, with aarch64/ARM64 and ppc64le support available on most of them.[1] Earlier releases (prior to version 3.1) also supported RedHat/CentOS 7, which was dropped starting with version 3.1.[2]
