Patrick C. Foran (born May 10, 1965) is a Canadian journalist, broadcaster, author and consumer advocate. He currently works with CTV News Toronto and is the host of the popular segment, “Consumer Alert".[1][2] In this role, Foran has helped consumers recover tens of millions of dollars, exposed scams, warned about unsafe products, and passed on countless money-saving tips to the public. In 2024 Foran received the Order of Ontario,[3][4] the province’s highest civilian honour, for his work at CTV News over more than three decades dispensing financial advice, warning of frauds and scams and helping consumers recover millions of dollars.[5]
Pat Foran has worked as a reporter for three different CTV stations prior to his role as CTV News Toronto’s consumer advocate.[citation needed]
He covered many high-profile stories, including the Paul Bernardo trial, and interviewed notable figures such as Sarah Ferguson, Wayne Gretzky, and John Candy. He’s been recognized with an Atlantic Journalism Award and Peel Police Award.[citation needed]
Off the air, Foran is an advocate for financial literacy, and was asked to serve on the federal government’s financial literacy task force from 2009 to 2011.[6][7]
Foran is also the author of four national bestselling books on consumer and financial issues.[8] His latest, The Smart, Savvy Young Consumer, is designed to help young Canadians spend and save wisely.[9]
Early life
Foran was born in Wingham, Ontario and is the son of Gordon Foran and Helen McIlhargey. The family grew up on a farm in St. Augustine, Ontario,[10] a small rural community in Huron County in the southwestern part of the province. In his family there are ten children, 6 boys and 4 girls.[11] His eldest brother James Joseph Foran died in a tragic farming accident when he was 16 years old. Later in life the family relocated to Lucan, Ontario. Interested in news and broadcasting, Foran attended Fanshawe College in Broadcast Journalism[12] following his time at Medway High School in Arva.
Broadcasting career
Foran's first job in broadcasting was in 1986 when he was hired by CKCO Kitchener, the CTV station for the area (now CTV Kitchener) and he worked in London, Ontario as a reporter and cameraman reporting on stories in the area.[citation needed]
In 1988 Foran accepted a job with ATV Halifax (now CTV Atlantic) running a news bureau is Northern New Brunswick.[citation needed] Stationed in Bathurst he covered a large area stretching north to Quebec's Gaspe Region, east to Shippigan and the Acadian Peninsula, west to Edmundston N.B and south to the Miramichi area. After a year and a half in Bathurst he was promoted to Moncton's news Bureau.[citation needed] Foran covered national stories from there including issues with the NB government and the Meech Lake Accord as well as the Cormier Village Hayride Tragedy where a logging truck crashed into a family hayride where 13 people were killed and 45 others were injured.[citation needed]
In 1990 Foran was offered a job at CFTO-DT in Toronto (now known as CTV Toronto).[citation needed] For ten years Foran worked as a general assignment reporter covering the news of the day. It was in the year 2000 when Foran created Consumer Alert, a segment where consumes could contact the station to have their complaints and issues investigated and often resolved.[citation needed] The segment is extremely popular and Foran continues to host it on a nightly basis after more than 26 years. Foran stories play on CTV stations across the country, CTV News Channel and CP24, as well as occasionally on the CTV National News and he recently started working with CTV's Investigative division W5.[13][14]
