Kasimabad freedom fighters refers to the residents of Kasimabad town and nearby villages in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, who participated in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule between 1857 and 1947.

Background

Kasimabad, located in eastern Uttar Pradesh, was an active center of resistance during the 1857 Rebellion and the Quit India Movement of 1942. Villagers from Sonbarsa, Sherpur, and surrounding areas provided shelter, supplies, and direct participation in armed struggle.

1857 Rebellion

During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, several men from Ghazipur joined Babu Kunwar Singh’s forces:

  • Kazi Sheikh Mohammad Zulfiquar Ali Balkhi – A commander in Kunwar Singh’s army. He led guerrilla attacks on British positions in Ghazipur and Ballia districts. Local villagers of Sonbarsa provided him food and shelter during his operations.
  • Doolareh – A resident of Ghazipur who fought British troops in 1857. He was arrested in 1858 and executed by hanging in 1859 by colonial authorities.

Quit India Movement, 1942

On 18 August 1942, unarmed youths from Sherpur village near Kasimabad marched to Muhammadabad tehsil to hoist the Indian national flag. British police opened fire, killing eight young men on the spot. This incident became known as the Muhammadabad firing.

The eight martyrs were:

  1. Dr. Shivpujan Rai – Sherpur, leader of the group
  2. Risheshwar Rai – Sherpur
  3. Vansh Narayan Rai alias Lalta Rai – Sherpur
  4. Vashishth Narayan Rai – Sherpur
  5. Narayan Rai – Sherpur
  6. Ram Badan Upadhyay – Sherpur
  7. Raja Narayan Rai alias Raja Rai – Sherpur
  8. Raghupati Rai alias Vansh Narayan Rai II – Sherpur

Role of local villages: Residents of Sonbarsa, Kasimabad, and nearby villages hid freedom fighters, passed secret messages, and collected funds for the movement. Many families risked arrest by British police to support the cause of independence.

Legacy

The sacrifice of Kasimabad’s freedom fighters is remembered every year on 18 August in Sherpur and Muhammadabad. Their names are inscribed on the Shaheed Smarak in Ghazipur.
