Polycade is an American company that designs and sells PC-powered home and commercial arcade cabinets. The company was founded in 2015 by Tyler Bushnell. Jake Galler was brought on as a cofounder in 2018, and later left the company in 2022. Polycade is based in Portland, Oregon.[1] Polycade's products combine a modular cabinet design with software that lets users play both classic arcade titles and modern PC games on the same machine.[2]

Bushnell, the company's founder and CEO, is the son of Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese.[2][3]

History

Polycade was founded in 2015 in Los Angeles, California.[1][4] The company's first product, the Polycade Lux, was launched through a Kickstarter campaign that year and raised over $125,000.[5]

In October 2020, Polycade launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a new line of modular arcade hardware and software, reaching its $50,000 funding goal within 24 hours and ultimately raising over $78,000.[2][6] Around the same period, the company began piloting a coin-operated, pay-to-play version of its cabinet in bars in the Los Angeles area, under a revenue-sharing arrangement with venue operators.[3]

In November 2023, Polycade launched the Polycade Sente, a modular arcade system, on Kickstarter. The campaign raised more than $1 million within its first 24 hours.[5][7]

Products

Polycade's cabinets are built around a personal computer and run the company's proprietary Arcade Gaming Software (AGS), which allows owners to purchase games through Polycade's own storefront, connect a Steam library, or load their own ROM files.[2] Cabinets use arcade-style joysticks and buttons and are designed to be wall-mounted or freestanding.[3]

Polycade collaborated with Brook Accessory to create the "Neo-Arcade Controller Board",[8] which has the unique feature of being able to set the Xinput player order at the hardware level.

The company's product line has included the Polycade Lux, Polycade Lite, and Squadcade, all of which were discontinued in 2023 with the release of the Polycade Sente. The Polycade Sente system offers a variety of modular add-ons such as a stand, marquee, and decals. The company also makes arcade controllers, each with different types of arcade controls. These controllers can be used stand-alone with most computers, and are also compatible with the Sente product.[2][7]

Business operations

Polycade has raised funding through a combination of crowdfunding campaigns and equity investment, including a round on the SeedInvest platform.[9] The company has also sold arcade cabinets to bars, retailers, and other commercial venues in addition to its direct-to-consumer sales.[3]
