Project Bluefin (or just Bluefin) is a Linux distribution based on Fedora Silverblue. Built around the GNOME Desktop environment, it implements opinionated extensions and tools.
History
Early Days
It all began July 13th 2021, when Jorge Castro, a Canonical alumni, recently by -, made a "ublue" repo for his install script for Fedora Silverblue and OpenSuse MicroOS.[1] The scope of the project quickly grew, his intention was now to have a modern image based desktop to replace Ubuntu, including a Gnome desktop with apps and extensions.[2]
Castro started to talk about a few friends who quickly joined him on the project.[3]
The Creation of Bluefin
In January 2023, Universal Blue was created and the system image has known many names : "Ublue-image"[4], "Ublue-os Ubuntu" [5] and then March 8th 2023 "Bluefin" has been created.
The Rise of Distroless
In November 2025, a new project was started in ProjectBluefin's Github organisation, named "Distroless". Its goal is to create a version of the Bluefin image that doesn't use Fedora as base system image, but uses packages directly compiled from Gnome's repositories using Buildstream, the same tool used to make GNOME OS.[6]
