Draft:QSPICE

QSPICE® is a SPICE-based analog and mixed-signal electronic circuit simulator developed by Mike Engelhardt, who previously authored LTspice. QSPICE is produced by Qorvo, a semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in North Carolina. The software is designed to provide circuit simulation capabilities for analog, power, and mixed-signal design applications. It is distributed without usage restrictions, including for use with components produced by companies other than Qorvo. The program includes an embedded component library containing models from Qorvo and other manufacturers.

Overview

SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) originated in the early 1970s as a student project at the Electronics Research Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. SPICE1 was released in 1973 as an open-source analog electronic circuit simulator and became the foundation for numerous subsequent circuit simulation tools.

In 1999, Linear Technology (later acquired by Analog Devices) released LTspice, a free SPICE-based simulator developed by Mike Engelhardt. Although LTspice was widely adopted, its end-user license agreement restricted use with integrated circuits produced by other manufacturers.

Following his tenure at Linear Technology, Engelhardt worked as an independent consultant and proposed the development of a new circuit simulation platform to Qorvo. The resulting software, QSPICE, was designed to incorporate updated SPICE fundamentals, expanded modeling capabilities, and enhanced simulation and graphical performance.[1] QSPICE supports mixed-signal simulation and is intended for use in analog and power electronics design workflows.[2]

Features

QSPICE supports schematic capture and includes a built-in library of semiconductor device models. It is positioned as a general-purpose circuit simulation tool and does not restrict the use of third-party component models.[3]

Industry Recognition

QSPICE has received recognition within the electronics industry. In 2023, it was named Design Tool and Development Software Product of the Year at The Elektra Awards.[4] [5] In 2024, it received the Électrons d'Or Trophy from Electroniques magazine in the CAD / Measurement / Tools category, citing advances in circuit simulation performance and accuracy.[6]
