Queer Lens: A History of Photography is a 2025 anthology and photographic collection edited by Paul Martineau and Ryan Linkof, based on an art exhibit of the same name.[1][2] The book includes 293 images, as well as essays relating to the historical aspects of queer photography in the United States.[3]

Queer Lens won the 2026 Lambda Literary Award for Anthology.

Queer Lens was published to accompany the art exhibition of the same name displayed at the J. Paul Getty Museum from June 17 to September 28, 2025.

Queer Lens includes photographs and essays relating to queer history, primarily in the United States, broadly ranging from 1732 to 2021. Photographs are generally presented in chronological order, and include journalistic, artistic, and casual images. Notable photographers include F. Holland Day (1864–1933), Man Ray (1890–1976), Brassaï (1899-1984), Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004), Bruce Bellas (1909–1974), Edmund Teske (1911–1996), Andy Warhol (1928–1987), Peter Hujar (1934–1987), Diana Davies (born 1938), Cynthia MacAdams (born 1939), Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989), Herb Ritts (1952-2002), and David Wojnarowicz (1954–1992).[7]

Reception

Queer Lens was received a starred review from Foreword, whose Ali Ortiz called the collection "potent and inspiring".[8]

Emma Jacob, writing for Aesthetica, "The richness of LGBTQIA+ life is palpable" within the collection, "and the pages brim with authenticity."[2]

Queer Lens won the 2026 Lambda Literary Award for Anthology.[9]
