Rachel Gerrish (also credited as Rachel-Louise Gerrish) is a British broadcast journalist and news anchor based in San Francisco, California. She spent over six years at Global, Europe's largest commercial radio company, where she was a presenter and senior broadcast journalist. Her primary presenting role was on LBC News, the United Kingdom's only 24-hour rolling national news radio station, and she read news bulletins across Global's network of stations including Heart, Capital, Classic FM, and Smooth Radio.[1][2]

Before Global, Gerrish worked at Bauer Media and the Lincs FM Group, reading news and reporting across stations in South Yorkshire, Manchester, and nationally. Her news team was recognised with Arqiva and IRN Awards.[3][4][5] During her career, she has reported on stories of national significance including the Black Lives Matter protests in London and interviewed public figures including Captain Tom Moore.[6][7]

Early life and education

Gerrish studied at Peterborough Regional College before attending the University of Sheffield, where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Journalism Studies.[8] The University of Sheffield's Department of Journalism Studies is ranked first in the Russell Group for journalism and is one of the few UK universities accredited by both the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and the Professional Publishers Association.[9]

While at university, Gerrish served as Head of News at Forge Radio, the university's student radio station.[10] She also began freelance work at BBC Radio Sheffield.

Career

Lincs FM Group (2015–2016)

After leaving university, Gerrish joined the Lincs FM Group as a senior broadcast journalist and presenter, working across Trax FM, Rother FM, Ridings FM, and Dearne FM in South and West Yorkshire.[3][3] During this period, her news team covered stories of national significance including the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal and the campaign for justice following the Hillsborough disaster. The team was recognised with awards at the Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards and the IRN Awards.[3][4][5]

In 2016, the Hallam FM news team, which shared staff with the Lincs FM Group's South Yorkshire stations, won the IRN News Team of the Year award. Judges described the team as "on top of its game" and recognised it for "delivering brilliant and creative exclusives."[4][11]

Bauer Media (2016–2018)

Gerrish moved to Bauer Media in Manchester, where she reported and read news bulletins across the group's national and regional portfolio. Her work spanned stations including KISS, Planet Rock, Kerrang! Radio, Heat Radio, Hallam FM, Radio City, and Metro Radio, adapting tone and content for audiences ranging from rock and dance music listeners to regional news audiences.[3]

Global (2018–2024)

In 2018, Gerrish joined Global, Europe's largest commercial radio company, as a presenter and senior broadcast journalist.[2][12] Her primary presenting role was on LBC News, which launched as a 24-hour national rolling news radio station on 28 October 2019, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.[1][13][14]

At LBC News, Gerrish presented and produced multi-hour live news programmes, covering breaking news and conducting interviews with politicians, business figures, and subject-matter experts.[2] Her interviewees included academics such as Dr David Jeffery of the University of Liverpool, who appeared on her programme to discuss British politics,[15] and Dr Grace Augustine of the University of Bath, who was interviewed about the Post Office Horizon IT scandal.[16]

In June 2020, Gerrish reported on the ground from the Black Lives Matter protests at Westminster.[6] In October 2020, she interviewed Captain Tom Moore about the prospect of a second national lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.[7]

In addition to presenting on LBC News, Gerrish created and read live and pre-recorded news bulletins across Global's network of stations, including LBC, Heart, Capital, Classic FM, and Smooth Radio, adapting her delivery for each brand's audience.[9]

During her tenure, LBC News experienced significant audience growth. By the first quarter of 2024, the station reached approximately 990,000 weekly listeners, and in the fourth quarter of 2024, it recorded 20% year-on-year growth in its audience.[17][18]

Gerrish departed Global in late 2024.[2]

San Francisco (2025–present)

In early 2025, Gerrish relocated from London to San Francisco, California.[2] She has built an audience on TikTok under the handle @rachelsanfrancisco, covering Bay Area stories and culture.[19]

Awards and recognition

Gerrish's news teams have been recognised at national radio industry award ceremonies:

  • IRN Awards (2016): Hallam FM won News Team of the Year (Over 1 million Total Survey Area), with judges citing "brilliant and creative exclusives."[4][11]
  • IRN Awards (2015): Hallam FM won Best News Special or Feature for "Prostitution Uncovered," described by judges as "a hugely impressive piece of broadcasting."[5][20]
  • Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards: Hallam FM received multiple nominations and awards during the period Gerrish worked across the Lincs FM Group's South Yorkshire stations.[3][21]
