Rational is a German fitted kitchen and kitchen furniture brand founded in 1963 in Melle-Riemsloh, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.[1] The brand has been associated with fitted kitchens, kitchen furniture and modular kitchen systems.

History

Rational was founded by Walter Fischer on 1 October 1963 in Melle-Riemsloh, Germany.[1] According to Küchenplaner-Magazin, the Waldmünchen factory was established in 1967, and Rational became part of the Italian Snaidero Group in 1993.[1] The Austrian kitchen brand Regina was added to the business in 2000.[1]

In April 2021, trade press reported that Snaidero had sold the Rational business to the Bravat Group. The transaction also included Rational Built-in Kitchens (U.K.) Ltd., Regina and the brand Mahlzeit by Rational.[2] IFDM reported that production of Rational kitchens for the German market would continue for three years at Snaidero's Majano plant in Udine, Italy.[3]

In 2022, Rational filed for insolvency proceedings.[4] In 2024, trade press reported that wf Rational Küchen was being relaunched as a successor company, with the name referring to founder Walter Fischer.[5] KBBReview reported in September 2024 that the company was preparing to return to the UK market, with production planned to restart in Germany and the first kitchens planned for delivery in January 2025.[6]

Products

Rational's product range includes fitted kitchens, kitchen furniture and modular kitchen systems. The company's website presents kitchen styles including modern, classic and multifunctional living-space concepts.[7]

Design collaborations

According to company history materials, Rational worked with designer Karim Rashid on the Floo kitchen range in 2016.[8]

Awards and recognition

Rational lists several design and brand awards on its company website, including German Brand Award recognition in 2018, 2021 and 2022.[9]

Distinction from Rational AG

The kitchen brand Rational should not be confused with Rational AG, a separate German company founded in 1973 that produces equipment for hot food preparation in professional and commercial kitchens.[10]
