Rick Loverd** is an American science communicator, comic book writer, and entertainment industry professional. He is the Program Director of the [Science & Entertainment Exchange](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_%26_Entertainment_Exchange), a program of the [National Academy of Sciences](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Academy_of_Sciences) that connects scientists and engineers with film and television creators to promote accurate portrayals of science in popular media. He is also the co-creator and writer of the comic book series *Berserker* (Top Cow Productions) and *Venus* (BOOM! Studios).

Career

Entertainment industry beginnings

overd began his career in 2001 as an agent's assistant at the [Creative Artists Agency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Artists_Agency) in Los Angeles, where he worked until 2003. Science & Entertainment Exchange

In March 2009, Loverd joined the Science & Entertainment Exchange as Director of Development. The Exchange had been launched in November 2008 with help from Hollywood figures including director [Jerry Zucker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Zucker) and producer Janet Zucker. In September 2012, Loverd was promoted to Program Director, the position he continues to hold.

The Science & Entertainment Exchange operates from a local office in Los Angeles, with management based at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, D.C. Its mission is to introduce entertainment professionals to leading scientists and engineers in order to encourage scientifically informed storytelling. The Exchange has also produced more than 250 events in Los Angeles, New York, Scottsdale, and Napa Valley targeted at the Hollywood community.

The Exchange maintains an office at the [California NanoSystems Institute](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_NanoSystems_Institute) at UCLA, where it operates alongside the Art|Sci Center. In a 2015 interview, Loverd observed that audiences had become significantly more sophisticated about scientific accuracy in entertainment over the previous decade, citing growing public interest in films such as *[Interstellar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_(film))* and *[Gravity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_(2013_film))*.

Comic books

*Berserker* (2008–2010)

In 2008, Loverd created the comic book series *Berserker*, announced at [San Diego Comic-Con](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Comic-Con) by [Top Cow Productions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Cow_Productions) in partnership with actor [Milo Ventimiglia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milo_Ventimiglia) and Russ Cundiff of DiVide Pictures. Drawing on Norse mythology, the series follows modern-day descendants of berserker warriors who discover they have inherited superhuman, rage-fueled powers, and become entangled in a long-running underground conflict between forces tied to Midgard and Asgard. The book featured art by [Jeremy Haun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Haun), with variant covers by Haun and Dale Keown. A zero issue debuted in 2009, followed by a six-issue miniseries published through 2010.

*Venus* (2015–2016)

In December 2015, [BOOM! Studios](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boom!_Studios) published the first issue of *Venus*, a four-part science fiction miniseries written by Loverd with art by Huang Danlan and covers by W. Scott Forbes. Co-developed with BOOM!'s Filip Sablik, the series is set in 2150, in a future where Earth's resources have been depleted and nations compete to mine other worlds; with China having claimed Mars, an American-led mission crash-lands on Venus and must survive its hostile environment. Loverd has said the concept grew out of a talk by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory deputy chief scientist Kevin Hand on the early climatic similarities between Earth and Venus. Astronomer and science writer [Phil Plait](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Plait) contributed an essay on the planet to the fourth issue. The series was praised for grounding its adventure storytelling in plausible planetary science.

Other writing

In 2014, Loverd worked as a freelance writer for Victory Hill Entertainment on the Marvel S.T.A.T.I.O.N. (Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network) exhibition, an interactive touring attraction based on the [Marvel Cinematic Universe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Cinematic_Universe).

Public speaking and media appearances
