Roger A. Canaff (born May 21, 1967) is an American attorney, author, and public speaker. He is recognized for his work in prosecuting child abuse and sexual assault cases, his contributions to forensic nursing education, and his novels in the crime and psychological thriller genre. Canaff has appeared as a legal analyst on national media and has published both fiction and scholarly work.[1][2]
Early life and education
Canaff was born in New York City and raised in Northern Virginia.[2] He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1992 and a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1995.[3]
Career
In 1996, Canaff joined the Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, where he focused on child abuse, sexual assault, and violence against women. He helped establish Alexandria’s first Child Advocacy Center, now the Center for Alexandria’s Children.
Beginning in 2003, he worked with the National District Attorneys Association,[4] training prosecutors, medical professionals, and social workers on child abuse cases. He later served as president of the board of End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI),[5] contributing to the Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examination (SAMFE) Virtual Practicum, a training tool for forensic nurses.[6]
In 2005, Canaff became an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx, specializing in child abuse and sex crimes. In 2007, he joined the New York State Attorney General’s Office as Deputy Chief, where he helped launch the Sex Offender Management Bureau.
Between 2009 and 2012, he served as a Highly Qualified Expert for the United States Army Legal Services Agency,[9] advising Judge Advocate General attorneys on prosecuting special victim cases.[10]
In 2021, Canaff contributed a chapter on youth abuse in institutional settings to Springer’s Handbook of Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Across the Lifespan.[11]
Public Speaking
Canaff has appeared on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper 360°, offering commentary on sexual violence and criminal justice issues.
Writing
Canaff’s first novel, Copperhead Road,[12] was influenced by his own experiences as a survivor of child sexual abuse and his professional work as a prosecutor. His later novels, including Among the Dead (2020), Bleed Through (2020), and City Dark (2022), continue to explore themes of trauma and justice.
City Dark received attention from independent reviewers. Publishers Weekly described it as “a character‑driven family drama with strong suspense elements,”[13] while the San Francisco Book Review called it “gritty, cleverly plotted, and well written.”[14]
Reception
Canaff’s novels have been positively reviewed in independent outlets. City Dark was a Goodreads First Reads pick in September 2022[15] and has accumulated thousands of reader reviews.[16][17]
