Rojava Film Commune (Kurmanji Kurdish: Komîna Fîlm a Rojava)

Background

Rojava Film Commune was established in July of 2015, in the wake the Rojava revolution to produce and distribute films portraying regional culture and political struggles. Members of the commune went on to create the Rojava Film Academy and the annual Rojava International Film Festival.[1]

While its films have been shown around the world, the commune has more recently presented its work in a traveling exhibition titled “Forms of Freedom.” Organized in collaboration with curator iLiana Fokianaki, the show debuted at State of Concept, an alternative art space in Athens, in 2018, before moving to Gallery Nova in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2019, and then landing at e-flux in New York earlier this year.

International showings

The Communes films are regularly upon release shown through international film festivals.[citation needed]Vague. Elaborate.[vague]

Forms of Freedom

In 2015 the commune held their first art exhibition in the United States of America, Forms of Freedom, curated by iLiana Fokianaki. The exhibition was held at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, part of New York's The New School.[2] In the proceeding years the exhibition went on to be shown at Athens State of Concept and Gallery Nova in Croatia before returning to New York, hosted by E-flux.[1]
