SPEAR Training Center is a sports performance and personal training facility in Vernon Hills, Illinois. It was opened in 2016 by strength coaches Jon Sicora and Jeff McCoy, and offers strength training, athletic recovery, and nutrition services for professional, collegiate, and amateur athletes as well as general fitness clients. Several professional athletes have used the facility for offseason training, among them a number of Chicago Bears players.[1]
History
Sicora and McCoy leased space in a Vernon Hills business park in late 2015, spent the following months outfitting it, and opened SPEAR in April 2016.[2] The facility occupies about 12,000 square feet.[1]
Coaching staff
Jon Sicora is SPEAR's performance director and holds the Poliquin (PICP) Level 5 Master Strength Coach certification. Co-founder Jeff McCoy, a former West Virginia University football player, is director of operations and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.[3] Former Iowa running back Mark Weisman has worked at SPEAR as a sports performance coach.[1]
Services
SPEAR provides personal and semi-private training, sports performance training, team training, and Pilates, along with recovery services such as fascial stretch therapy, cupping, instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization, compression therapy, and red-light therapy. It also offers nutrition coaching and body composition analysis.[4][5]
Notable clients
Several professional, Olympic, and collegiate athletes have trained at SPEAR Training Center.
Notable athletes associated with SPEAR include NBA players Jalen Brunson, Max Christie, Cam Christie, and Tacko Fall; NFL players Aidan O'Connell, DJ Moore, David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert, Roschon Johnson, Austin Booker, Gervon Dexter Sr., Eddie Goldman, DeMarcus Walker, Darnell Mooney, David Bass, and Justin Smith; and Olympic medalist and Team USA hockey player Megan Bozek. Numerous Chicago Bears players have trained at the facility throughout their professional careers, including David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert, Roschon Johnson, Austin Booker, Gervon Dexter Sr., Eddie Goldman, DeMarcus Walker, and Darnell Mooney.
Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky rehabilitated a shoulder injury and trained at the facility during the 2020 offseason. He continued training with SPEAR until signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.
In 2021, Chicago Bears offensive lineman James Daniels trained at SPEAR alongside teammates Cody Whitehair, Charles Leno Jr., Elijah Wilkinson, and Dieter Eiselen. Former Loyola University Chicago basketball standout Cameron Krutwig also trained at the facility while preparing for the 2021 NBA Draft.
Founder Jon Sicora additionally worked with NFL tight end Greg Olsen during his tenure at Life Time Fitness prior to opening SPEAR Training Center in 2016.
