Sami Harize (born January 26, 1980, in Sidi Bou Saïd, Tunis) is a Tunisian scholar, accredited tour guide (specialized in premium services.^[1]), tourism expert, and a tourism activist. He appeared in a number of documentaries and interviews through the years. He is also known for his photography exhibitions.

After studies in guiding at the Institute of Higher Tourism Studies in Tunis, Sami Harize began his career as a national professional certified tour guide. He also completed a master's degree in Heritage Sciences and Museography from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of La Manouba university. He is currently pursuing a doctoral thesis on "History of cultural tourism between yesterday and today in Tunisia".

Noted by his former professors at the Institute of Higher Tourism Studies, he was entrusted with teaching the tourism and guiding courses at the same institute where he trained, before differences of opinion with the institution and the civil unrest in Tunisia forced him to leave the institute and travel to the United States and then to Russia.

One of Harize's main points of disagreement with the institutions that ruled Tunisian tourism at the time concerned the necessary balance to be struck between the different forms of tourism. The exodus of visitors from mass tourism caused by the political instability appeared to him as an opportunity to develop quality tourism based on professional services, off-the-beaten-track tours and high-level guidance for both cultural and natural tourism enthusiasts.

He presented his views during several lectures given to public authorities and created an association (the Cultural Association for the Discovery of Tunisia (CADT).) to disseminate his ideas and put them into practice through various events and the establishment of luxury guiding services. He is also one of the driving forces behind the Union Nationale des Guides Touristiques Indépendants of Tunisia (UNGTI)^[2]

He also embarked on a doctoral thesis focusing on the history of cultural tourism in Tunisia.

Parallel to his guide work and policy advocacy, he conducted field research on how Tunisians maintain a vibrant relationship with archaeological sites, some of which appear to be remnants of older religious practices. This new type of research found widespread international acclaim but remained mostly ignored by the Tunisian academical institutions.

One of the results of this research was the book "Le Mystère de la Sainte-Sorcière de Dougga" ("The Mystery of the holy witch of Dougga"), in which he explored the survival of the cult of female Muslim saints in many parts of Tunisia, which he linked with ancient Berbers traditions pre-dating the Christian era. Explained as a survival of ancient Berber mythology built around a fertility myth built around a terrestrial "Terra Mater" and a celestial, inaccessible, divine male in control of rain, the cult often focus its practices around ancient hydraulic infrastructures. Harrize shows in his book how some of those traditions are still actively maintained in rural areas such as Dougga or Zama Regia.
