Sarah Stankorb is an American journalist and author. She writes on a variety of subjects, including religion, politics, and gender.^[1]

Stankorb was raised in Girard, Ohio, a suburb of Youngstown, and describes living in "the sort of neighborhood where most of our parents were in and out of work, but enough bills got paid that we all generally stayed put."^[2] She attended Westminster College, where she studied world religion and philosophy, and University of Chicago Divinity School, where she earned her master's degree.^[3][4]

During college, Stankorb was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a vocal disorder, and received a series of Botox shots as treatment. Stankorb had an unusual reaction in which she lost her voice entirely for a month at a time, after each injection.^[5] She was later diagnosed with generalized dystonia as well^[6] and received deep brain stimulation surgery to treat it.^[7]

Stankorb's first book, Disobedient Women: How a Small Group of Faithful Women Exposed Abuse, Brought Down Powerful Pastors, and Ignited an Evangelical Reckoning,^[8] appeared on USA Today's Best-Seller list.^[9]

Stankorb is a critic of Christian patriarchy,^{[10][11][12][13][14]} and writes about the women who resist this system.^[15]

Stankorb writes about stories of abuse within institutions. She earned a Society of Professional Journalists Best Community Issues story award for an investigation of rape culture on two Cincinnati-area university campuses.^[16][17] In 2021, Stankorb penned an exposé^[18] concerning allegations of abuse and mishandling of abuse at a church and school founded by Christian nationalist pastor Douglas Wilson^[19] for VICE (magazine).^[20][21][22] Stankorb was awarded third place in Best In-Depth Newswriting by the American Academy of Religion in 2024^[23] for a profile^[24] of Christa Brown, a Southern Baptist Convention sex abuse survivor and advocate for reform.^[25][26]

Stankorb's writing has appeared in numerous publications in print and online, including in an essay for GOOD Magazine in which she coined the term for Xennials, for the cusp generation between Gen X and Millennials.^[27][28][29]

Stankorb's next book, Damned If She Does, will be about the millions of women who have left American churches in the past decade.^[30][31]
