ScottCakes is a bakery in Provincetown, Massachusetts, that sells a single product: a butter-cake cupcake topped with pink vanilla buttercream frosting. It was founded by Scott Cunningham, who began selling the cupcakes as a street vendor in 2009 and opened a storefront at 353 Commercial Street in 2011.[1][2]
History
Scott Cunningham, a former actor and nanny from New York City, came to Provincetown in 2008 for a six-week theater engagement and stayed in the town.[1][2] He had baked cupcakes for the children he cared for as a nanny, using a recipe he adapted from a 1950s Better Homes & Gardens cookbook.[1] He began selling the cupcakes from a table on Commercial Street in 2009.[2]
Although the town's licensing department had issued Cunningham food-service permits for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, town officials determined in 2010 that the permits had been granted in error because a zoning bylaw prohibited outdoor food sales.[3] After a complaint from another vendor, the building commissioner issued a cease-and-desist order and police repeatedly ticketed Cunningham for selling food on the street.[3][4] For the remainder of that summer he sold the cupcakes from the town's former firehouse in partnership with the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, donating a portion of the proceeds to the group.[5] Cunningham contested the fines and planned to seek a jury trial; in January 2011 the Cape and Islands District Attorney's office declined to prosecute, the town dropped the case, and it revoked his food-service permit.[4][6]
Cunningham opened a permanent storefront at 353 Commercial Street on May 28, 2011.[2][1]
Concept and product
ScottCakes sells a single item: a golden butter cake topped with pink vanilla buttercream frosting, offered in regular and miniature sizes.[1] The shop occupies a basement-level space on Commercial Street.[1] Because the business operates seasonally, Cunningham ships the cupcakes year-round to customers outside Provincetown.[1][7]
Reception
ScottCakes has been the subject of regional and local news coverage. The Boston Globe wrote about the business in its food section in 2017,[1] Provincetown Magazine covered it in 2021,[8] and WCVB-TV reported on it in 2023.[7] It was also mentioned in a 2024 article in The New Yorker about Provincetown.[9]
