Draft:Scott Reeves

Scott Reeves is an American jazz trombonist, alto flugelhornist, composer, arranger, and educator. He has performed and recorded with groups including the Dave Liebman Big Band, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, the Oliver Lake Big Band, and Bill Mobley's big band. His work as a composer and arranger has been particularly associated with large jazz ensembles and contemporary big-band music.[1]

Career

Reeves developed his career as a performer, composer, and arranger in the New York jazz scene. He has performed at venues including Birdland, the Village Vanguard, Smoke, the Iridium, Small's, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, and the Knitting Factory. As a sideman, Reeves has worked with the Dave Liebman Big Band, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and other large ensembles.[2]

Reeves's composing and arranging work has been influenced by his experience performing in big bands. In a 2018 feature in DownBeat, Suzanne Lorge described Reeves's approach to composing for his own orchestra as an effort to balance traditional big-band writing with contemporary harmonic ideas and unconventional forms.[3]

Reeves formed the Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra in 2008. The orchestra's recorded debut, Portraits and Places, was released in 2016. In a review for All About Jazz, Jack Bowers described Reeves as a composer with a strong command of melody, harmony, and counterpoint, and characterized his arrangements as polished and engaging.[4]

The Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra's second album, Without A Trace, was released in 2018. The album combined Reeves's original compositions with arrangements of standards, including "Speak Low", "All or Nothing at All", and Wayne Shorter's "Juju".[5]

In DownBeat, Lorge wrote that Reeves's work on Without A Trace reflected his experience playing and arranging for big bands while pursuing a contemporary sound. The article discussed his use of modern metric ideas, layered harmonies, and unconventional combinations of instruments within the big-band format.[3]

Without A Trace also received coverage from other jazz publications. London Jazz News reviewed the album in 2018, describing Reeves as a New York big-band leader and composer and highlighting the album's original compositions, standards, orchestration, and ensemble performances.[6]

Reeves's earlier album Portraits and Places was also reviewed by Jazz Weekly. George W. Harris described Reeves as an alto flugelhorn player and conductor and discussed the compositions, arrangements, and performances of his 17-piece orchestra.[7]

Education and teaching

Reeves has worked as a college jazz educator for several decades. He has taught at institutions including the Juilliard School, the University of Southern Maine, Virginia Commonwealth University, Memphis State University, and Western Washington University. He later served as a professor of music at the City College of New York, part of the City University of New York (CUNY).[1]

The City College of New York has identified Reeves as a former member of its jazz faculty. He is listed as Professor Emeritus in the college's graduate bulletin.[8]

Reeves has also written instructional material on jazz improvisation. His book Creative Jazz Improvisation has been used in college jazz curricula, according to JazzTimes.[1]
