"See Me Again", also known as "Never See Me Again", is an unreleased song by American rapper Kanye West. The song features supporting vocals from Bon Iver, the Wrldfms Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, and Elly Jackson. It interpolates "I Never Want to See you Again" by Quasi. It was originally intended to be on his unreleased album Good Ass Job[1]

Background and composition

"See Me Again" was originally leaked on October 22, 2010, just one month before West's fifth studio album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which the track is rumored to have meant to be included in.[2] The song features a repeating melody of piano notes, similar to the song "Futari Dake no Ceremony" by Yukiko Okada, who had committed suicide by jumping off of the Sun Music Building in 1986, following her depression over unrequited love[3] with West mumbling over the beat. The song is said to have been produced and written solely by West.[4][5] Later versions of the song included[1] added drums and supporting vocals from Bon Iver, The WRLDFMS Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson and Elly Jackson.[6] [7]

Speculation for the existence of "See Me Again" has been debated among fans for years. One such theory is that because of the backlash West received for interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, and his Mother, Donda West's death, West wrote the song as a retirement from music or as a suicide note as he was thought to have been contemplating suicide at the time as later in the 2012 song "Clique" he makes references of his mental instability during this era. The lyrics also talk about his stress from "Being the greatest" and have several references to drug abuse and his wish for a Xanax as he "runs the world", this could also be interpreted as West wanting to overdose as a suicide method.[8][9][10]

The song "See Me Now", included on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, has a similar title and is seen as a triumphant contrast to "See Me Again" and the song Power's end is also similar to See Me Again's suicidal tone.[4]

Reception

Alex Kelly of Tone Start placed the song fourth on a list of the ten saddest West songs, and calls it "encapsulating". He felt that the track’s "dynamics don’t change much, so the message feels relatively direct, which allows you to absorb every second of the track."[5]
