ShotTracker is an American sports technology company that develops sensor-based systems for tracking basketball performance and statistics in real time. Founded in 2013 by Davyeon Ross and Bruce Ianni, the company is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas. Its technology uses sensors embedded in basketballs, player-worn sensors, and receivers installed around a court to collect positional and performance data during practices and games. The technology has been adopted by collegiate basketball programs, conferences, and broadcasters.[1][2]

History

ShotTracker was founded in 2013 by entrepreneurs Davyeon Ross and Bruce Ianni after developing technology intended to automate the collection of basketball statistics and shooting data.[1] The company's first product focused on individual player shooting analysis before expanding into systems designed for team practices and games.[3]

In October 2016, ShotTracker announced a $5 million seed financing round. Investors included former NBA commissioner David Stern, Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, Greycroft Partners, Elysian Park Ventures, and R/GA Ventures. The funding was intended to support commercialization of the company's team tracking platform.[4][5]

The company raised a $10.4 million Series A financing round in May 2018 led by Ward Ventures, with participation from existing investors including David Stern and Magic Johnson.[6]

In January 2021, ShotTracker announced an $11 million financing round led by Evertz Technologies with participation from Verizon Ventures.[7] Later that year, Hearst Ventures announced a $2 million investment in the company.[8]

Technology

ShotTracker's technology combines three primary components: sensors embedded in basketballs, wearable sensors used by players, and receivers mounted around a basketball court. The system tracks the position of players and the ball in real time and generates statistical and positional data during practices and games.[2]

According to ESPN, the system is capable of producing more than 70 statistical measurements with sub-second latency. The technology has been used by coaches for in-game analysis, player development, and practice evaluation.[2]

Prior to the NCAA's approval of limited in-game use, the technology was deployed during the 2017 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, where automated player and team statistics were generated throughout the tournament.[9]

Partnerships and adoption

In 2018, ShotTracker technology was used during the Hall of Fame Classic after the NCAA granted a waiver allowing live statistical information to be transmitted to team benches during competition.[10]

In 2019, the Mountain West Conference announced a partnership with ShotTracker to install the company's tracking technology across conference basketball venues. ESPN reported that, as of 2019, the technology had been adopted by approximately 61 NCAA Division I basketball programs across 12 conferences.[2]

Later in 2019, ShotTracker collaborated with Vizrt and Astucemedia to integrate player-tracking data into ESPN's broadcast of the Hall of Fame Classic.[11]

In May 2021, the Big 12 Conference announced a multiyear partnership with ShotTracker to expand the use of the company's technology across conference basketball programs.[12]
