Simon Hanley (31 December 1962 – 31 December 2022) was a British sports broadcaster, television presenter, and football commentator. He was widely recognized as the quintessential English-language voice of Spanish football, serving as a primary commentator and lead editorial figure for LaLiga TV.[1]

Early life and education

Hanley was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1962.[2] He grew up as an avid supporter of Newcastle United F.C., a passion passed down from his grandfather. He attended The King's School in Grantham, Lincolnshire, during his youth.[3]

Career

Hanley later relocated to Spain, where he established a prolific career in sports journalism and broadcasting. He worked extensively across major international networks, providing commentary and tactical analysis for BeIN Sports and Gol Play.

When the Spanish top-flight league launched LaLiga TV—a dedicated 24-hour English-language channel aimed at introducing Spanish football to audiences in the United Kingdom and globally—Hanley was tasked with assembling its core editorial team. In addition to commentating on live matches, he hosted the channel's flagship studio panel shows alongside high-profile pundits and journalists, including Graham Hunter, Guillem Balagué, Pete Jenson, and Gaizka Mendieta.

Death

Following a short illness, Hanley died in Barcelona on 31 December 2022, which was also his 60th birthday.[4] His passing prompted widespread tributes across the sports broadcasting community, with colleagues and journalists remembering him as an exceptional presenter, a strong behind-the-scenes leader, and a definitive pillar in popularising Spanish football for English-speaking viewers.
